Petronas Twin Towers

The Skybridge and the view from level 86

At 452 metres, the Petronas Twin Towers are the symbol of modern Malaysia and the one sight every first-timer wants to see up close. The steel-clad towers, designed with an Islamic geometric floor plan, rise above KLCC Park and the Suria KLCC mall, and they look different at every hour: silver at noon, gold at sunset and glittering after dark. A visit takes you first to the Skybridge, the two-storey link between the towers at levels 41 and 42, and then up to the observation deck on level 86 of Tower 2, where the city spreads out to the hills. Visitor numbers are capped each day and tickets are sold for set entry times, so the easiest way in is to book online. The towers are closed to visitors on Mondays.

How it works: you choose a ticket online, show your mobile voucher at the visitor counter on the concourse level below the towers and arrive at least fifteen minutes before your slot. Groups go up together with a host, spend time on the Skybridge, then continue to level 86. The whole visit is well organised and takes about an hour once you are inside.

What to expect: the Skybridge is about the drama of standing between the towers; the real panorama is from level 86, which looks across to KL Tower and the old city. Security screening is airport-style, and bags may need to be checked. Tickets are nonrefundable, so check the weather and your plans before booking.

Making the most of it: book a late-afternoon slot and stay for dusk, then walk out into KLCC Park for the evening fountain shows and the classic photo of the lit towers from the lake. Aquaria KLCC is a short walk away through the convention centre, which makes a good pairing for a rainy afternoon.
