Langkawi

Langkawi is the Malaysian island where a rainforest mountain, a UNESCO geopark and a long run of easy white beaches share a single small island in the Andaman Sea.

This guide organises the trip around what is actually worth doing: the SkyCab cable car and the curved Sky Bridge high on Gunung Machinchang, a boat or kayak through the mangroves and limestone cliffs of Kilim Karst Geoforest Park, island hopping to the freshwater lake on Dayang Bunting, a jet ski run out of Pantai Cenang, the Telaga Tujuh waterfall, Underwater World and the quiet sands of Tanjung Rhu, plus the eagle statue and duty-free shops of Kuah town. It then matches you to a hotel, from the cliff-backed luxury of Four Seasons at Tanjung Rhu to rainforest chalets at Burau Bay and beach resorts along the Cenang strip, because on an island with one ring road, where you sleep decides how much of your holiday is spent in a taxi.
