Where to Stay in Langkawi

A neighbourhood-by-neighbourhood guide to choosing a base on Langkawi, with the resorts we recommend from a value stay near Cenang to a cliff-backed luxury beach.

Langkawi is a single island with one ring road, so where you sleep decides how much time you spend in transport. The island has distinct bases, each with its own mood, and the right one depends on whether you want nightlife and choice, a nature setting or complete quiet. Here is how the main areas compare, and which of our hotels sits where.

Pantai Cenang and Pantai Tengah: the practical choice

This is the island's most convenient base, a long west-facing strip of beach with restaurants, shops, water sports and sunsets, close to the airport. It suits first-timers, families and anyone who wants to eat out and move around without a car. Pelangi Beach Resort and Spa is the big-resort option, right on the sand, renovated in 2024 and strong for families, with three pools and a waterslide. The Frangipani Langkawi Resort and Spa is smaller and calmer, with a private beach and a spa. For a lower budget, The Villa Langkawi at Pantai Tengah is a couple of minutes by car from the beach, with a pool and family rooms.

Burau Bay: nature and the SkyCab

At the west end of the island, Burau Bay is next to the SkyCab base and the Telaga Tujuh waterfall. Berjaya Langkawi Resort is the base here, with rainforest chalets among the trees and chalets on stilts over the water. It suits couples and families who like a jungle setting, and it makes the mountain sights easy. Cenang is a taxi ride away, so expect to use transfers for evenings out.

Tanjung Rhu: luxury and quiet

The north coast is the island's most beautiful and most remote stretch, with calm white sand, limestone cliffs and the Kilim mangroves on the doorstep. Four Seasons Resort Langkawi is the splurge, with pool pavilions and villas, a spa and excellent facilities for children. The trade-off is distance: Cenang and the SkyCab are about an hour away, and most guests eat on site. Choose it when the resort is the holiday.

Kuah: arrivals and convenience

The main town and ferry hub has duty-free shopping, local food and the Eagle Square waterfront, but it is not a beach base. Stay here only for an early ferry, a night on arrival or a budget stopover, and head to the coast for the rest.

How to choose

First-timers who want choice and walkable meals should pick Cenang. Couples after nature and easy mountain access should choose Burau Bay. Anyone who wants peace, space and a private beach should pay for Tanjung Rhu. If you plan to do many tours, a value base such as The Villa Langkawi leaves more budget for activities, since pickups are available from any coast.

Practical tips

Check which rates include breakfast, because many resorts charge extra. Ask for a quieter room away from beach bars and roads. Book early for the dry months and school holidays, when the best rooms go first. Confirm transfer options when you book, since a taxi from the airport to the north coast takes much longer than to Cenang. Whichever base you pick, use our first-timer's guide to organise your sightseeing by area.
