Where to Stay in Medellín

Which part of Medellín to sleep in: the Parque Lleras party zone, calmer Avenida El Poblado and Barrio Manila, and the hillside above, matched to five hotels.

Most visitors to Medellín stay in one district, El Poblado, and for good reason: it has the most hotels, the most restaurants and a safe, walkable feel. But El Poblado is not one place, and the right pocket depends on whether you want nightlife on your doorstep, a quiet avenue with parking, a social hostel or a hillside retreat. This guide breaks the district into four bases and ties each to one of our five hotels.

Parque Lleras: the lively center

If you want to walk to bars, restaurants and rooftop lounges, stay within a few minutes of Parque Lleras. The Click Clack Hotel Medellín at Calle 10B No. 37-29 is about two minutes on foot from the park, with a rooftop terrace, an outdoor pool, an open-air cinema and a spa. The Charlee Hotel at Calle 9A No. 37-16 is even closer, at about a minute, with balconies over the park, the Envy Rooftop pool and a free buffet breakfast. The trade-off is noise on weekend nights, so ask for a higher floor or a quieter room, and consider earplugs.

Avenida El Poblado: calmer and practical

The Dann Carlton Medellín at Carrera 43A No. 7-50 sits on one of the district's main avenues, a five-minute walk from Parque Poblado and about six from Lleras. It offers four restaurants, a pool and hot tub, a free breakfast buffet and free parking, and the Medellín Clinic is a minute away. It is a good pick for families, business travelers and anyone with a rental car, and it keeps nightlife within walking distance without being in the middle of it.

Barrio Manila: leafy and budget friendly

Los Patios Hostel at Carrera 43E No. 11-40 is an adults-only hostel with a pool, a rooftop, dorms and private rooms. Parque Poblado is about five minutes on foot, Lleras about ten and the Poblado Metro station about eight, which makes it the best-connected budget base for a traveler using the Metro and day tours. Manila has a relaxed, residential feel with cafes and restaurants nearby.

Las Palmas hillside: space and views

For a resort-style stay, the InterContinental Medellín at Calle 16 No. 28-51 on the Variante Las Palmas road offers a heated semi-Olympic pool, tennis courts, a spa, two restaurants, free parking and views of the city and mountains. You will use taxis or ride-hailing for sightseeing, since the IHG listing places the Museo de Antioquia about seven kilometers away. It suits couples seeking calm, families wanting a pool and drivers heading for Guatapé.

How the hotels compare

For a first visit with an eye on nightlife, choose The Click Clack or The Charlee. For comfort, breakfast and parking at a mid-range level, choose the Dann Carlton. For the lowest price and a social atmosphere, choose Los Patios. For a quiet splurge with facilities, choose the InterContinental. Breakfast is included at The Charlee and the Dann Carlton according to Expedia, is available for a fee at The Click Clack and Los Patios and is listed among the InterContinental amenities, so always confirm the terms of your rate.

Getting around from each base

From El Poblado, the Poblado Metro station is a short walk from Los Patios and about seventeen to eighteen minutes from the Lleras hotels, and taxis are inexpensive for the rest. The Comuna 13 tour we link meets at Estación Poblado, so staying in El Poblado puts you close to the start. Downtown sights, such as Plaza Botero and the Museo de Antioquia, are a short taxi or Metro ride away, and the Arví cable car route begins on Line A.

When to book

The Feria de las Flores in August and the December holidays fill hotels and raise prices, so reserve early for those windows. Whichever base you choose, plan your first evening around a food tour to get oriented.

Mentioned in this guide

Do

Comuna 13 Graffiti Tour

The hillside neighborhood that Medellín turned from a symbol of conflict into its best-known open-air gallery. A guided walk through the murals, the outdoor escalators and the viewpoint over the valley is the most talked-about half day in the city, and a local guide makes it far more than a photo stop.

Do

Medellín Guided Food Tour

A small-group evening walk through Medellín's everyday flavors: arepas, empanadas, fresh fruit, local sweets and street-corner classics, with a guide who explains the paisa food culture behind each bite. Tastings, a vegetarian option and gratuities are included.

Plaza BoteroDo

Plaza Botero

Twenty-three oversized bronze sculptures by Fernando Botero, scattered across an open plaza in the historic center. Free, open-air and endlessly photographable, it is the easiest way to meet Medellín's most famous artist, and it sits right beside the Museo de Antioquia.

Metrocable to Parque ArvíDo

Metrocable to Parque Arví

A transit ride that doubles as a scenic excursion: the Metro and two cable car lines lift you out of the valley and over forested ridges to Parque Arví, a mountain nature reserve of trails, markets and cool, fresh air. Cheap, high and one of the best-value days in the city.

Museo de AntioquiaDo

Museo de Antioquia

One of Colombia's great museums, in an Art Deco former city hall facing Plaza Botero. Botero paintings and sculptures, colonial and modern art, and a series of murals by Pedro Nel Gómez make it the essential indoor stop in the historic center.
