Big Cypress Lodge

The most unusual hotel in Memphis, with 103 rooms, treehouses and cabins set inside the giant Pyramid among indoor cypress trees and a swamp with alligators, plus bowling, restaurants and a skyline lookout.

★★★★★

Big Cypress Lodge is the most memorable place to stay in Memphis and our pick for families and anyone who wants something different. It opened in 2015 inside the Memphis Pyramid, the vast riverside landmark that also houses Bass Pro Shops, and its 103 rooms are arranged around an indoor world of towering cypress trees and a swamp where alligators and fish swim. Rooms are individually furnished in a rustic lodge style, and the most sought-after are the treehouse rooms built among the trees and the private cabins, including the Duck Cabin and Fly Fishing Lodge. Inside the Pyramid you also find a bowling alley, a choice of restaurants and bars, including The Lookout high up with skyline views, Wahlburgers Wild, The Fishbowl and The Den, a third-floor lounge, and what the lodge calls the nation’s tallest freestanding elevator, which rises to an observation deck at the top. Expedia rates it wonderful from more than 1,700 reviews.

Location and getting around: the lodge is at 1 Bass Pro Drive, on the riverfront at the northern edge of downtown, near the Pinch District. Beale Street, The Peabody and the downtown museums are a short rideshare away, and the riverfront walks start nearby. A car or rideshare is useful for Graceland, Sun Studio and Stax.

Rooms: each room is individually themed, with lodge-style furnishings and views over the indoor swamp or the trees. Treehouse rooms come in king and double queen styles, and they sell out first, so book early if you want one.

Who it suits: families, outdoorsy travelers and couples looking for a fun, one-of-a-kind stay. It is less suited to travelers who want to walk to Beale Street every night.

Good to know: the breakfast buffet is charged separately. Self-parking and valet each cost a nightly fee, and on-site parking should be requested in advance. Dogs are welcome in designated rooms. Expect shoppers and visitors in the public areas of the Pyramid during the day.
