The Peabody is the most famous hotel in Memphis and our splurge pick. It has stood at 149 Union Avenue since 1925, and its lobby, with a carved and painted ceiling, a travertine fountain and the Lobby Bar, is the social living room of the city. Twice a day the resident mallards march to and from the fountain, a tradition dating to the 1930s, and staying here means you can watch from the mezzanine before the crowds arrive. The hotel celebrated its centenary on Union Avenue in 2025 and remodeled its guest rooms the same year. Dining includes Chez Philippe, which the hotel describes as the only Forbes Four-Star and AAA Four-Diamond restaurant in the Mid-South, Capriccio Grill, an Italian steakhouse, the Corner Bar and the Peabody Deli and Desserts, plus Sunday brunch and afternoon tea. There is an indoor pool, a health club and a spa, and the rooftop, home to the Duck Palace, has views over downtown and the Mississippi. Expedia lists it as a five-star property with an exceptional guest rating.
Location and getting around: the hotel is in the heart of downtown, one block north of Beale Street and a short walk from the Rock ’n’ Soul Museum, FedExForum and the riverfront. The Civil Rights Museum and Sun Studio are a short rideshare away, and Graceland is about fifteen minutes south by car.
Rooms: the 463 rooms and suites combine heritage styling with modern comforts after the 2025 remodel, and the club floors, including the Peabody Club and Pembroke Club levels, add lounge access. Suites such as the Brinkley Suite suit longer or special stays.
Who it suits: couples on a special trip, first-timers who want to be steps from Beale Street, and anyone who loves a grand historic hotel. Families like being able to watch the ducks without a scrum.
Good to know: breakfast is charged separately unless your rate includes it, and parking is by valet for a nightly surcharge. Pets are allowed in specific rooms for a fee. Book Chez Philippe and afternoon tea ahead, and expect a busy lobby at 11:00 and 17:00.
