Where to Stay in Mendoza

A neighbourhood guide to sleeping in Mendoza, from the plaza-side Park Hyatt and the central Sheraton to a garden stay in Chacras de Coria, a vineyard hotel in Luján de Cuyo and a budget hostel.

Mendoza is spread out, and where you sleep changes the character of your trip. The city centre puts you among plazas, restaurants and tour pickups. The villages and vineyards to the south trade nightlife for quiet and a short walk to a tasting. Because most excursions run with hotel pickup, you can mix the two, but it helps to choose a base that fits your main plan.

City centre: for first-timers and short stays

The centre is a flat grid of plane-tree streets around Plaza Independencia, with the other four plazas, the pedestrian Sarmiento street, cafés and wine bars within walking distance. Tour operators pick up here, restaurants are close and taxis are cheap. The grand option is the Park Hyatt Mendoza, directly facing Plaza Independencia, with a spa and hammam, a pool, a casino and rooms with Andes or city views. It is the splurge pick for couples and business travellers. The Sheraton Mendoza Hotel, on Primitivo de la Reta, is a mid-range alternative with an indoor pool, the Neptune Spa, three restaurants including a steakhouse and free parking, which helps if you are hiring a car.

Budget in the centre

The Grapevine Hostel, on Avenida Bartolomé Mitre about three minutes on foot from Plaza Independencia, is the low-cost choice, with two dorms, a twin room, a free breakfast, a shared kitchen and a garden. It suits solo travellers and backpackers who plan to spend their days on tours and bikes. There is no parking and no pool, so it works best if you rely on taxis, buses and organised days out.

Chacras de Coria: for calm and character

Chacras de Coria is a leafy village south of the city, on the way to Luján de Cuyo, with a plaza, restaurants and a weekend market. It is about a quarter of an hour from the centre by taxi and close to a cluster of wineries. Casa Glebinias Hotel Jardin is a small garden hotel here, with suites and two-bedroom houses, a seasonal pool, a restaurant, a free breakfast buffet and free parking. It suits couples and families who want a quiet, homely base with easy access to the wine districts and a taxi ride to the city for dinner.

Luján de Cuyo: for wine lovers

If the point of the trip is the vineyards, sleep among them. Entre Cielos Wine and Wellness Hotel, on Guardia Vieja in Luján de Cuyo, is a working Malbec vineyard with 24 rooms and suites, a hammam and spa, a fine-dining restaurant and a seasonal pool. It is adults only, so it suits couples and friends. Bodegas are minutes away by car, and the hotel can arrange drivers and tours. The trade-off is distance from the city, so you will take a taxi for dinners in the centre and for the mountain day trips.

How to choose

For a first trip of three or four days with a mix of wine, mountains and city time, base yourself in the centre and book day tours with pickup. For a wine-focused trip, split your stay: two nights in the centre for the plazas and the Andes day, and two in Luján de Cuyo or Chacras de Coria for the vineyards. If you want to visit the Uco Valley, consider a night at a lodge in the valley to avoid the long drive back, though this guide does not cover those lodges. Book early for the harvest in February and March and for long weekends and holidays, when rates rise and the best rooms go first.

Practical notes

Check what your rate includes, since breakfast and parking vary. Ask whether the hotel can arrange airport transfers, because the airport is about ten kilometres from the centre and longer from the villages. In summer, confirm that the pool is open and that your room has air conditioning, and in winter ask about heating. Noise is a consideration on busy avenues, so request a quiet room if you are a light sleeper.

Plaza Independencia and the Plazas of MendozaDo

Plaza Independencia and the Plazas of Mendoza

Mendoza's city centre is built around five plazas, with Independencia at the middle and España, Chile, Italia and San Martín at the corners. Tiled fountains, shaded benches, weekend craft stalls and street performers make a gentle, free city walk.

Do

Luján de Cuyo Malbec Winery Tour

Luján de Cuyo is where Argentine Malbec first won the world's attention. A winery visit here means old vines, a tour of the cellar and a tasting of tank and barrel samples, usually less than half an hour south of Mendoza city.

Do

Maipú Bike and Wine Tour

The classic Mendoza wine day: pedal flat country lanes between old family bodegas, an olive oil mill and tasting rooms in Maipú, the oldest wine district, just south-east of the city. It is cheap, social and relaxed, with plenty of shade and a map of stops.

Do

Uco Valley Winery Day

The Uco Valley is Mendoza's high-altitude wine frontier, with boutique estates set against the Andes about an hour and a half south of the city. A private-driver day lets you pick the wineries, the pace and a long lunch with the mountains as a backdrop.
