★★★★★

Four Seasons Hotel Minneapolis brought big-city luxury to the Twin Cities when it opened in June 2022, and it remains the splurge choice in town. It occupies the lower floors of a glassy tower on Hennepin Avenue, downtown near the Mississippi, and it is connected to the skyway system, which matters a great deal in a Minnesota winter. There are 222 guest rooms and 39 suites, alongside private residences above, and the rooms are calm, contemporary and generous, with large windows looking out over downtown or towards the river. Dining is a highlight. Mara, the Mediterranean restaurant and bar from acclaimed local chef Gavin Kaysen, is one of the city’s headline tables, Socca Café serves coffee and light bites, and Riva Terrace offers Italian dining by the outdoor pool in the warmer months. The wellness side is just as strong, with a spa of six treatment rooms, an indoor pool and an outdoor pool, both with whirlpools, private saunas and steam rooms, and a 24-hour fitness centre with a separate studio. It suits luxury travellers, couples celebrating something and business travellers who want the best service in the city.

Location and getting around: the hotel is at 245 Hennepin Avenue, on the river side of downtown. The Stone Arch Bridge, Mill City Museum and the Guthrie Theater are an easy walk along the riverfront, the North Loop is a few minutes away, and the skyway connection lets you reach much of downtown without going outside. The light rail runs nearby for the airport and Mall of America.

Rooms: rooms and suites are spacious and quiet, with high floors and big windows. Ask for a river view if you can, and consider a suite for longer stays or special occasions.

Who it suits: couples, luxury travellers and anyone celebrating, as well as business travellers who value the skyway access, the fitness centre and the restaurant for meetings. Families appreciate the indoor pool on a cold day.

Good to know: book Mara in advance, as it is popular with locals as well as guests. The outdoor pool and Riva Terrace are seasonal, but the indoor pool, saunas and spa make the hotel a warm retreat in November. Ask about parking and breakfast when you book, as rates and inclusions vary.
