Lake Nakuru National Park Day Trip

Kenya’s rhino sanctuary in the Great Rift Valley

Lake Nakuru National Park is the best place near Nairobi to see rhinos. The park surrounds a soda lake on the floor of the Great Rift Valley, about three hours north-west of the city, and is fenced as a sanctuary for both black and white rhinos, which you have an excellent chance of seeing on a game drive. Rothschild giraffes, buffalo, waterbuck, zebras and lions also live here, and leopards are sometimes spotted in the yellow-barked acacia woodland. The lake was once world-famous for its pink carpets of flamingos; their numbers rise and fall with the water level, so treat them as a bonus rather than a promise. Viewpoints such as Baboon Cliff look out over the whole lake. The Tiqets tour we link, Lake Nakuru National Park: Day Trip From Nairobi, is a nine-hour trip that starts at 6:20 in the morning and includes pickup, a four-wheel-drive tour van, park entry fees and lunch.

How it works: after pickup in Nairobi the tour drives down into the Great Rift Valley and reaches the park in time for a mid-morning game drive. You stop for lunch, then continue the drive on the way out of the park, looking for rhinos, giraffes and lions, before returning to Nairobi in the late afternoon or early evening. Park fees, transport and lunch are included; drinks and tips are not. Free cancellation is available up to 24 hours before.

Fees: since October 2025 the Kenya Wildlife Service charges non-resident adults 90 US dollars to enter Lake Nakuru, paid through eCitizen, so a tour that includes the fee saves effort.

Making the most of it: ask your driver to head for the rhino areas early, when the animals are most active, and bring binoculars for the birds on the lake shore. Nakuru is a shorter, easier day than Amboseli, and it is an ideal choice if you want to see rhinos but cannot fit in a longer safari. It also pairs well with Lake Naivasha on a two-day Rift Valley trip.
