Petra Museum

The Nabataean story in 280 objects

The Petra Museum stands right beside the visitor centre at the entrance to the archaeological park, so it is easy to fit into any visit. Opened on World Heritage Day in 2019, it brings together around 280 artefacts across five halls, covering Petra’s history, how the Nabataeans lived, traded and worshipped, and what excavations have revealed. Expect sculpture, carved stone, pottery, coins, jewellery and tools, with clear displays in English and Arabic. It fills in the story the monuments cannot tell on their own: how a desert people built a trading capital, managed water in a dry land and absorbed influences from Greece, Rome and Egypt. The museum keeps long hours, into the evening, so it also works well after a day inside the site.

How it works: the museum is a few steps from the Petra ticket office and the main gate. The Jordan Museums site lists it as open from 08:30 into the evening, later in summer than in winter.

What to expect: the galleries are compact, air-conditioned and calm, a welcome break from sun and dust. An hour is enough for most visitors.

Making the most of it: go in the late afternoon after a day in the site, when you will recognise the places the objects came from, or on the evening of arrival before Petra by Night. It is also a good rainy-day or rest-day option.
