Morro Dois Irmaos, the Two Brothers, are the twin peaks that close the western end of Ipanema and Leblon beaches, and from the higher of them you get what many people consider the best view in Rio: the whole curve of Leblon, Ipanema and Arpoador, the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon, Corcovado with Christ the Redeemer, Sugarloaf in the distance, and on the other side the great bulk of Pedra da Gavea and the beach of Sao Conrado. The trail is short, around forty-five minutes to an hour of steady uphill walking on forest paths, with some rocky steps near the top, and it is suitable for anyone of reasonable fitness. What makes it unusual is how you reach it. The trailhead is at the top of Vidigal, a favela, or informal hillside community, that climbs the slope between Leblon and Sao Conrado. Visitors ride a mototaxi or a community van from the entrance on Avenida Niemeyer up the winding main street to the start of the trail, passing homes, small shops, bars and guesthouses, and the walk becomes a window into a community that is part of the fabric of the city rather than separate from it. Vidigal has changed a great deal in recent years, with hostels, bars and restaurants with spectacular views opening, and many residents earn a living from visitors, whether as guides, drivers or hosts. That is why the best way to do the hike is with a guide who lives in the community: your money goes directly to local people, you get context on the history and daily life of Vidigal, and your guide will know whether conditions are calm. Conditions do change. Rio's favelas see police operations against drug-trafficking gangs, and on 20 April 2026 an early-morning operation in Vidigal led to a shoot-out that left about two hundred people who had climbed for the sunrise unable to come down until police escorted them out, while the coastal road below was blocked.
Hiking responsibly: treat Vidigal as a neighbourhood where people live, not an attraction. Ask before photographing people or homes, buy water and snacks from local shops, and if you stop for a drink at one of the viewpoint bars on the way down, you are supporting the local economy. Avoid tours that drive through communities in closed vehicles and treat residents as a spectacle; choose small, resident-led walks. The US State Department places informal housing developments in Rio at its highest warning level and advises its citizens not to enter them, even on tours, which is a serious consideration for American travellers in particular; other governments advise caution and local knowledge.
How to do it well: the sunrise is the classic time, but because operations tend to begin before dawn, many guides now prefer a morning or late-afternoon hike. Check the local news on the morning of your hike, and do not go if there are reports of police activity in Vidigal or neighbouring Rocinha. Take the mototaxi or van up from Avenida Niemeyer, wear trail shoes, bring water, and carry little of value. If something happens while you are on the mountain, stay put, follow your guide and wait for the route to be declared clear. Riotur lists the trail among the city's official outdoor experiences.
Who it suits: fit travellers who want the best view in the South Zone for relatively little effort, and visitors interested in seeing life in a favela with someone who belongs there. It is not for those uncomfortable with the risks, who can get a similar view from the Arpoador rock or from the top of Pedra Bonita.

Good Questions
How hard is the Dois Irmaos hike?
Moderate. It takes about forty-five minutes to an hour uphill on a forest trail with some rocky steps, after a mototaxi or van ride up through Vidigal. Reasonable fitness is enough.
Is the Dois Irmaos hike safe?
It is popular and usually calm, but Vidigal has police operations against gangs. In April 2026 about two hundred sunrise hikers were stuck on the summit during a shoot-out below. Go with a local guide, check the news on the day and skip it if there is any police activity.
Do I need a guide?
It is strongly recommended. A guide who lives in Vidigal knows the conditions, explains the community and keeps your money local.
Is it ethical to visit a favela?
It can be, if you go with residents, spend money locally, ask before taking photographs and treat it as a neighbourhood rather than a spectacle. Avoid tours that drive through in closed vehicles.
What does the US travel advisory say about favelas?
The US State Department advises its citizens not to visit informal housing developments, even on guided tours, and rates them at its highest warning level. Other governments advise caution.
