Niteroi Contemporary Art Museum

Niemeyer's saucer above Guanabara Bay

The Museu de Arte Contemporanea de Niteroi is one of the most photographed buildings in Brazil, and it repays the short trip across the bay many times over. Designed by Oscar Niemeyer and opened on 2 September 1996, it stands on the Mirante da Boa Viagem, a rocky headland in Niteroi that juts into Guanabara Bay facing Rio. The building looks like a flower or a spaceship, a white concrete cup rising from a single narrow base and widening into a ring of tinted windows, set in a shallow reflecting pool that makes it appear to float above the rock and the water. A long, curving ramp, painted red, sweeps visitors up from the plaza to the entrance, and that ramp, the pool and the white curve together form one of Niemeyer's purest late works. Inside, a circular gallery wraps around the building with a continuous band of windows that frame a panorama of the bay: Sugarloaf, the Christ on Corcovado, the Rio skyline, the Rio-Niteroi bridge and the islands, all reflected and repeated as you walk. The museum houses the Joao Sattamini collection, one of the most important collections of contemporary Brazilian art, and runs changing exhibitions drawn from it and from guest artists. In 2026 the museum celebrated its thirtieth anniversary with a programme of events and three anniversary exhibitions running until late November, and the city has signalled a new phase of maintenance for the thirty-year-old structure, so check the official information before you go. The museum is the anchor of the Caminho Niemeyer, a sequence of buildings by the architect along the Niteroi waterfront, and the trip itself is part of the pleasure: the ferry from Praca XV in central Rio crosses the bay in around twenty minutes with superb views of the city from the water.

Practical details: the city of Niteroi lists the galleries as open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 6pm, with last entry at 5.30pm, and the outdoor plaza open daily. Tickets are modest, sold at the box office for cash or online through Sympla, and entry is free for everyone on Wednesdays, as well as for children under seven, people with disabilities, Niteroi residents and, charmingly, anyone who arrives by bicycle. Check the city's museum page before travelling, as hours can change for maintenance and events.

Getting there: take the ferry (the barcas) from Praca XV in central Rio to Niteroi, a crossing of around twenty minutes, then a short taxi or ride-hailing car to the museum, or a pleasant walk of around half an hour along the waterfront past the Icarai beach area. Alternatively, drive or take a car over the Rio-Niteroi bridge, though traffic on the bridge can be heavy. Late afternoon is the best time for photographs, when the sun lights the building and Rio across the bay; on clear days the view of Sugarloaf and Corcovado from the ramp is unforgettable.

Who it suits: architecture lovers above all, but also photographers, couples and anyone who wants a different view of Rio. The art inside is serious and contemporary; the building and view are the main event for most visitors, and a half day is enough. Children enjoy the ferry ride and the spaceship shape.
