Mount Bisoke Hike

A volcano summit and a crater lake in the clouds

Mount Bisoke is one of the volcanoes of the Virunga range, and the hike to its summit crater lake is the most popular non-primate activity in Volcanoes National Park. The trail climbs steadily through farmland, then bamboo and montane forest, and finally through misty giant lobelia and heath to the rim, where a small lake sits in the crater. On clear days the views reach across the volcanoes toward the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, and on cloudy days the mist adds its own atmosphere. This Viator day tour from Kigali has about 240 reviews, among the highest of any activity in the area, and a from-price near 380 US dollars. The hike is demanding but achievable for a reasonably fit walker, usually taking several hours up and a shorter time down, and is led by park guides. The route can be wet and slippery, so waterproofs and boots are essential. It makes a good active day before or after a gorilla trek, and a good alternative for travellers who cannot get a permit.

What to expect on the trail: you meet at the park headquarters at Kinigi in the morning, are assigned a guide and walk up through cultivated fields, where potatoes and pyrethrum grow, into dense forest. The final section is steep and muddy, and the altitude, above 3,000 metres at the top, can make you breathless even if you are fit. An armed ranger often accompanies the group as a precaution against buffalo and other wildlife.

Costs and permits: the hike requires a park fee in addition to the tour price in some packages, so read the inclusions on the listing and check the Rwanda Development Board booking site for the current fee if you are arranging it yourself. We have not verified a current hike fee, so confirm it before you pay. Porters are available to carry your pack, and tipping guides and porters is customary.

Planning: choose the drier months of June to September and December to February if you can, but expect rain and cloud at any time. Start early so that you reach the crater before the clouds close in. Layers matter, because it can be warm in the valley and cold at the lake. Bring gloves, a hat, water, lunch and a change of socks. The route is also close to the border with the DRC, so follow your guide's instructions, stay on marked trails and check the current travel advisory before you travel. Fit visitors can combine this hike with gorilla trekking or golden monkey tracking on consecutive days.
