Marigot Bay

A sheltered harbour, a marina and the island's prettiest view

Marigot Bay is Saint Lucia's most photogenic harbour. A narrow entrance opens into a calm, almost enclosed bay ringed by green hills and palms, which the tourism board describes as a peaceful and somewhat upscale spot that draws yachts from around the world. The Marigot Bay Yacht Haven marina is the hub, with waterfront restaurants and cafes, boat excursions and sailing charters, and a viewpoint above the bay is the classic photo stop for the whole curve of the water. The inner harbour, sometimes called Hurricane Hole, was used historically as a storm anchorage because of its steep hills and narrow mouth. Across the harbour, the Marigot Beach Club and Dive Resort sits on the hillside and is reached by a short boat crossing. The area is mostly walkable around the marina, and the best time to visit for dry weather is December to May. There is no ticket to buy: it is a place to eat, swim, sail and wander.

What to do: the simplest plan is lunch at a waterfront table, a swim at the small beach reached by the boat crossing and a stroll around the marina. If you prefer to be on the water, sailing and boat excursions leave from the marina, and the bay is a regular stop on catamaran trips along the west coast. The viewpoint above the harbour is a short drive or climb away and is worth it for the photograph, especially in the soft light of early morning or late afternoon.

Good to know: the harbour is shallow and sheltered, so the water is calm and clear most days, but the marina area can be busy with yachts and visitors in the winter season. The road from Castries winds through hills, and from Rodney Bay it is a longer drive, so many visitors combine Marigot with a day trip. Check the weather in hurricane season, which runs to the end of November, as boat operations can change at short notice.

Where it fits: Marigot Bay sits roughly halfway between the northern resorts and Soufrière, so it makes a natural lunch or swim stop on the way south, or a quiet base for a night or two. Hewanorra airport is about an hour and ten minutes by road. Pair it with a catamaran cruise, a zipline morning in the hills above Castries or a visit to Pigeon Island on another day, and consider spending a night at the Marigot Beach Club for the full harbour experience.
