When to Visit San Antonio

A season-by-season guide to San Antonio — spring and Fiesta, the long hot summer, autumn festivals, the River Walk holiday lights and mild winters — with event dates and booking advice.

San Antonio is a year-round destination, but the experience changes dramatically with the seasons. Summers are long and hot, spring and autumn are glorious, and winter is mild and festive. Here is what each season brings and how to plan for it.

Spring (March to May): the sweet spot. Spring is the best time to visit for most travelers. Temperatures are warm but comfortable, wildflowers bloom along the highways and in the Hill Country, and outdoor sights like the missions and the River Walk are at their most pleasant. Spring break in March brings families and crowds to the theme parks and the River Walk. The highlight is Fiesta San Antonio, the city's biggest celebration, which runs April 15 to 25, 2027. Fiesta began in 1891 with the Battle of Flowers parade honoring the heroes of the Alamo and San Jacinto, and today it is an eleven-day citywide party with more than a hundred events, including the Battle of Flowers Parade, the nighttime Fiesta Flambeau Parade, the Texas Cavaliers River Parade on the River Walk, and A Night in Old San Antonio, a huge food and culture festival in La Villita. Collecting and trading Fiesta medals is a beloved tradition. Book hotels months ahead for Fiesta, and expect road closures and crowds downtown.

Summer (June to September): hot, but manageable. Summers are hot and humid, with long stretches of very warm days. This is peak season for families and for the theme parks — SeaWorld, Aquatica, Six Flags Fiesta Texas and its water park are open daily — and the resort pools on the north side come into their own. Plan outdoor sightseeing for early morning and evening, and spend afternoons in museums, air-conditioned shops, the hotel pool or underground at Natural Bridge Caverns, which stays around seventy degrees all year. The River Walk is pleasant in the evenings, when the river breeze and shade cool the air. Hotel rates downtown can be lower in summer outside holiday weekends and major conventions.

Autumn (October to November): festivals and cooler days. Autumn brings relief from the heat and a busy event calendar. Theme parks host Halloween events, from Fright Fest at Six Flags to SeaWorld's seasonal nights. Día de los Muertos is celebrated with altars, parades and festivals around the start of November, including events at Market Square and along the River Walk. By November, the weather is ideal for walking and cycling the Mission Trail. The holiday season begins in late November with the Ford Holiday River Parade and Lighting Ceremony, scheduled for November 27, 2026, which switches on the River Walk holiday lights.

Winter (December to February): lights and quiet. Winters are generally mild, with occasional cold snaps. From the end of November into early January, the River Walk is lit with holiday lights strung through the cypress trees, and a cruise or stroll under the lights is magical. Six Flags Fiesta Texas runs Holiday in the Park, beginning November 21, 2026, and SeaWorld hosts its Christmas Celebration from mid-November. The Alamo, the missions and museums are quieter after the holidays, making January and February good for crowd-free sightseeing, though the theme parks operate on reduced schedules. Pack layers for cool evenings.

Crowds and prices. The busiest times are spring break, Fiesta, summer holidays and the holiday-lights season, and major conventions can fill downtown hotels at any time of year. The quietest, often cheapest, periods are January, February and late summer. If you are flexible, aim for weekdays, which are calmer at the Alamo and the theme parks.

Theme-park calendars. SeaWorld and Six Flags Fiesta Texas operate daily in summer and on a reduced schedule, mostly weekends and event days, for much of the rest of the year. Water parks are generally open only in the warm season. Always check the official calendars before planning a park day.

The Alamo and construction. The Alamo is open daily all year except Christmas Day, with free timed tickets for the church. Construction for the Alamo Visitor Center and Museum, scheduled to open in 2028, continues around the plaza, so check the latest construction news before your visit.

What to pack. For spring and autumn, light layers, comfortable walking shoes and a light rain jacket cover most days, as sudden thunderstorms can roll through. In summer, pack breathable clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, high-factor sunscreen and a refillable water bottle, plus a swimsuit for the hotel pool and a change of clothes for water rides at the parks. In winter, bring a warm layer for evenings on the River Walk and at outdoor holiday events, since cold fronts can drop temperatures quickly. For the missions by bike, padded shorts and a small backpack with water and snacks make the day far more comfortable. Year-round, dress modestly for visits to the Alamo Church, the mission churches and San Fernando Cathedral.

Weather surprises. Central Texas weather can change fast. Heavy rain can cause flash flooding on low-water crossings, so never drive through flooded roads, and the River Walk is protected by flood-control tunnels and gates that keep the downtown loop open in most storms. Occasional winter freezes are short-lived but can close roads and attractions for a day or two, so build a little flexibility into winter plans.

Our recommendation. Visit in spring or autumn for the best weather, with Fiesta in April if you love a party and don't mind crowds. Late November and December are wonderful for the holiday lights and festive atmosphere. Summer works for families planning theme parks and pools, as long as you plan around the heat.
