Santiago guide

Where to Stay in Santiago

Where to stay in Santiago de Chile for every kind of trip: the historic centre, bohemian Lastarria, safe and central Providencia and upscale El Golf, with the best hotel for each.

Santiago is a big city, but the parts visitors use most lie along a single line: metro Line 1, which runs east from the historic centre through Lastarria, Providencia and Las Condes. Staying near it makes everything easy. Here are the main choices, matched to the five hotels on this site.

The historic centre: for sightseeing on foot

The area around the Alameda, La Moneda and the Plaza de Armas has the government buildings, the cathedral and many museums. It is busy and full of life by day but empties at night, so it suits travellers who sightsee hard and eat elsewhere. Hotel Plaza San Francisco, on the Alameda opposite the San Francisco church and beside the old-world Barrio París-Londres, is the best-placed classic hotel here, with 146 rooms, an indoor pool, a spa and free parking, and La Moneda about seven minutes away on foot.

Lastarria: for culture and charm

Between Cerro Santa Lucía and Parque Forestal, this compact quarter of cafes, wine bars, bookshops and cinemas is the most attractive place to stay in central Santiago, and the Bellas Artes museum and Bellavista are a short walk away. Hotel Cumbres Lastarria is a stylish design hotel full of Chilean art, with a rooftop terrace and heated pool looking to Parque Forestal and the Andes, plus free breakfast and parking. It suits couples and culture lovers. Weekends are lively, so light sleepers should ask for an interior room.

Providencia: for safety, value and convenience

East of the centre, Providencia is leafy, safe and packed with restaurants, and Line 1 runs right through it. It is the best all-round base for most visitors. Solace Hotel Santiago is a comfortable four-star on a quiet side street three minutes from Pedro de Valdivia station, with a seasonal rooftop pool, the Zafferano restaurant and free parking for wine-country drives. For the lowest price, the ibis Santiago Providencia is a two-minute walk from Manuel Montt station, with compact rooms, an Italian restaurant and a 24-hour desk; children twelve and under eat breakfast free.

El Golf and Las Condes: for luxury and business

Further east, El Golf is a polished district of offices, galleries and some of the city’s best restaurants, quiet at night and very safe. The Ritz-Carlton, Santiago, our featured pick, has 205 rooms and suites, a glass-roofed rooftop spa and pool facing the Andes and the Estró restaurant, and El Golf metro station is a minute away, so the historic centre is about twenty minutes by train.

Matching base to trip

For a luxury trip or a special occasion, The Ritz-Carlton. For charm and walking to museums, Cumbres Lastarria. For a central classic with a pool, Plaza San Francisco. For a safe, good-value base by the metro, Solace. For the tightest budget, the ibis.

Practical tips

Stay close to a Line 1 station and you will rarely need a taxi. If you plan wine tours or a drive to Valparaíso, pick a hotel with parking, such as Cumbres Lastarria, Solace or Plaza San Francisco. Book early for spring and summer weekends and for September, when the national holidays fill the city.
