The Night Safari opened in 1994 as the first zoo in the world designed entirely for night, and it is still the most original wildlife experience in Singapore. Most tropical animals are active after dark, so the park opens in the evening and lights its habitats with a soft, moon-like glow that lets you see the animals without disturbing them. The core of a visit is the tram ride: an open-sided train with live or recorded commentary that loops through themed zones based on the Himalayan foothills, Equatorial Africa, Indian subcontinent and Asian riverine forest, passing Asian elephants, rhinos, hippos, striped hyenas, Malayan tigers and herds of antelope and deer that often stand right beside the track. Then you get off and walk. Four short walking trails are the part many visitors miss and the part they remember most: the Leopard Trail, with clouded leopards and a walk-through bat enclosure; the Fishing Cat Trail; the East Lodge Trail; and the Wallaby Trail. There is also a live animal show in the amphitheatre most evenings, and tribal performances at the entrance plaza. Entry is timed, and the early slots sell out first with tour groups, so book ahead. The later slots are calmer and darker. The park sits in the Mandai Wildlife Reserve next to Singapore Zoo, about thirty to forty minutes from downtown, and the classic plan is the Zoo in the afternoon, dinner at the shared entrance, then the Night Safari.

The Night Safari shares its forest edge with the Upper Seletar Reservoir and the Central Catchment Nature Reserve, which is why it feels wilder than its size: the paths run under real rainforest, the air is humid and loud with insects, and the boundaries are moats, rocks and plantings rather than fences. Lighting was designed to resemble moonlight, and the rule inside is no flash photography, which protects the animals and keeps the atmosphere. Phones and cameras struggle in the dark, so think of it as a visit for your eyes rather than your feed.

How to do it: book a timed entry online (tickets usually include unlimited tram rides), and arrive at least fifteen minutes before your slot. Take the tram first to get the full overview, then do the walking trails at your own pace; the Leopard Trail and East Lodge Trail are the best. If the tram queue is long at your entry time, start with a trail and ride later, as queues often shrink. The show in the amphitheatre is gentle and family-oriented; check the evening schedule at the entrance. Insect repellent, comfortable shoes and a water bottle are the essentials, and expect the night to stay warm. Wheelchairs, strollers and wagons can be rented. Food is available at the entrance plaza, and outside food is not allowed into the park.

Getting there is the one hassle. The Mandai Khatib bus runs from Khatib MRT station, regular public buses run from other stations, and taxis or ride-hailing take thirty to forty minutes from the city. Late-evening rides back can be slow to arrive, and a taxi surcharge applies on trips out of the reserve in the evening, so book your ride as you finish. Combination tickets with the Zoo, River Wonders and Bird Paradise are the best value if you plan a full Mandai day; see our Mandai guide. For very young children, choose an early slot; for couples and older kids, a later slot gives the darker, quieter experience the park was built for.

Good Questions

Do we need to book the Night Safari in advance?

Yes, ideally. Entry is timed and the early slots sell out first. Booking ahead also lets you plan your Zoo afternoon and transport around the slot.

Is the tram included?

Standard tickets include tram rides. The tram is the core of the visit; walk the trails afterwards for the closer encounters.

Can we take photos?

Yes, but without flash, which disturbs the animals. Low light makes photos hard, so most people simply watch.

How do we get back to the city late?

The Mandai Khatib bus links to Khatib MRT, and taxis and ride-hailing serve the park. Book your ride as you finish, since late-evening cars can take time and a surcharge applies.

Is it suitable for young children?

Yes, with an early slot. The tram is easy, the trails are short, and strollers and wagons can be rented. Bring repellent and water.
