Vitosha Nature Park

The mountain on Sofia’s doorstep

Few capitals have a mountain like Vitosha. Its dome rises straight from the southern suburbs to Cherni Vrah, the Black Peak, at about two thousand three hundred metres, and on a clear day it fills the end of every boulevard. Vitosha was declared a nature park in 1934, the first in the Balkans, and it is criss-crossed with marked trails through pine and beech forest, high meadows and peat bogs. The best-known spot is Zlatnite Mostove, the Golden Bridges, a river of giant rounded boulders where a stream gurgles beneath the stones, with an easy walk and cafés nearby. Aleko is the hub for summit hikes and the winter ski area. Entry to the park is free, and weekends see half of Sofia on the trails.

Getting there: the simplest way is a taxi or ride-hailing car to the Golden Bridges or Aleko, or a city bus to the foot of the mountain; at weekends extra services run. Lift operations change from season to season, so check before relying on a gondola or chairlift.

Choosing a walk: for an easy outing, wander the Golden Bridges and the forest paths around them. For a proper hike, go from Aleko to Cherni Vrah, a few hours up and back on a broad trail. Boyana Waterfall, reached on foot from the Boyana district, is another favourite and pairs well with Boyana Church.

Be prepared: weather changes quickly at altitude, and it can be cold, windy or foggy on the summit when the city is warm. Wear proper shoes, carry water and a layer, and start early in short winter days. There are mountain huts serving simple food on the main routes.
