Galle Fort Day Tour from Colombo

A walled Dutch-era town and the south coast in one day

Galle Fort is one of the best-preserved colonial fortified towns in Asia, and unlike most it is still lived in. The Portuguese first fortified the headland in the sixteenth century, the Dutch rebuilt it in stone in the seventeenth, and the British left churches, a clock tower and a lighthouse. Today the ramparts wrap a grid of narrow streets lined with old merchant houses, mosques, churches, cafés, galleries and boutique hotels, and the whole fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walking the walls at sunset, from the lighthouse past the bastions, is the classic Galle moment. The Viator tour we link, from Lanka Tour Host, turns Galle into a full day out from Colombo with a private driver: the stilt fishermen of the south coast, a swim at Jungle Beach, an hour in the fort, Hikkaduwa beach, the tsunami photo museum and the Kosgoda sea turtle conservation centre, with lunch. It is very well reviewed, with free cancellation up to a day ahead.

How it works: the tour starts at seven in the morning with pickup in Colombo, in a private air-conditioned vehicle. Lunch at a local restaurant, bottled water and drinks are included, and entrance fees are covered depending on the package you pick, so check which option you are booking. The southern expressway makes the run to Galle quicker than the old coast road, and the return follows the coast. Bring a swimsuit for Jungle Beach.

What to expect: the first stops are the stilt fishermen, perched on poles in the shallows, and Jungle Beach, a sheltered cove near Unawatuna. In Galle Fort you have about an hour on foot along the ramparts, past the lighthouse and the Dutch Reformed Church, and through Church Street and Pedlar Street. On the way back come a gem shop, Hikkaduwa beach, a small tsunami photo museum remembering 2004, and the Kosgoda turtle hatchery, where rescued eggs and young turtles are cared for.

Making the most of it: an hour in the fort is a taster. If Galle grabs you, come back and stay a night or two inside the walls. In November, the south coast sees heavy showers and rough seas, so swimming may be off; the fort itself is lovely in any weather.
