Jetwing Lighthouse is the splurge of the south coast and one of the great works of Geoffrey Bawa, the architect who defined tropical modernism in Sri Lanka. The hotel sits on a hillock above the Indian Ocean on the northern edge of Galle, and Bawa let the rocky site shape the building: low wings step along the shore, open corridors frame the surf, and the entrance staircase winds up past a dramatic sculpted frieze by the artist Laki Senanayake, with interiors shaped with the designer Ena de Silva. There are about sixty-three rooms and suites, all with ocean or garden views, from luxury rooms in the main wing to themed suites, some with private plunge pools. Two outdoor pools and a children’s pool look over the sea, and there is a full-service spa with a sauna, steam room and hot tub. Dining choices include The Cinnamon Room, The Verandah, Cardamom Café, Lorenzo’s Pizza Bar and the Coats of Arms Bar, and there is a tennis court.
Location and getting around: the hotel is at Dadella, about three kilometres along the coast from Galle Fort, a short drive or tuk-tuk ride. That means you sleep away from the fort’s evening crowds but can be on the ramparts in minutes. Free parking is available, and drivers for day trips to Mirissa, Udawalawe or back to Colombo pick up from the door.
The rooms: main-wing luxury rooms are generous at about sixty square metres with ocean views; spa-wing rooms are larger still. The themed suites are the treat, especially those with plunge pools.
Who it suits: architecture lovers, honeymooners and couples on a special trip, and families who want space, pools and a resort setting near Galle.
Good to know: breakfast may be charged separately on some rates. The sea in front is rough for swimming, especially in November, so the pools are where you will swim. Book a sunset drink on the terrace and allow time to explore Bawa’s corridors with their views.
