Renaissance St. Augustine Historic Downtown Hotel

A AAA Four Diamond hotel at the top of the old town, steps from the City Gates, St. George Street and the Castillo — Spanish-revival styling, an outdoor pool, a craft-cocktail restaurant and the easiest walk-everywhere location of any full-service hotel in St. Augustine.

★★★★★

The Renaissance is the hotel to book when you want full-service comfort and want to leave the car parked for the whole stay. It sits at 6 West Castillo Drive, at the corner of San Marco Avenue, on the north edge of the historic district: the City Gates and the start of St. George Street are a couple of minutes on foot, the Castillo de San Marcos is a short walk across the green, and the Visitor Information Center and the city’s main parking garage are next door, which matters in a town where parking is the eternal headache. The building is newer construction designed in a Spanish-revival style that blends with the old town, with a courtyard feel, stucco walls and tile roofs, and the rooms are contemporary and comfortable, with the brand’s design-forward touches. On site, Castillo Craft Bar + Kitchen serves new American food and craft cocktails from breakfast through late evening, a cafe and marketplace pours Starbucks coffee for early starts, and there is a bar for a nightcap after a ghost tour. An outdoor pool is a genuine asset in summer, when midday on St. George Street is punishing, and the fitness center and meeting space make it practical for working trips and weddings. The hotel holds a AAA Four Diamond rating and won a recent Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice award, and it is a member of Marriott Bonvoy, so points travelers can stay right in the old town. The trade-off is atmosphere: this is a polished modern hotel rather than a historic landmark, so if you want to sleep inside the history, the Casa Monica or an inn is the call.

Location strategy: being at the north end of the historic district is ideal for the Castillo, St. George Street, the Colonial Quarter and the San Marco Avenue sights — the Fountain of Youth, Mission Nombre de Dios and the Old Jail are all within an easy walk or a short trolley ride. The Old Town Trolley and Ripley’s Red Train stop nearby. The southern old town, the bayfront restaurants and Aviles Street are a fifteen-minute stroll, pleasant in the evening. Beaches on Anastasia Island are a short drive across the Bridge of Lions.

Practicalities: parking is valet only, at a daily charge that is significant but typical for downtown; you can also self-park in the city garage next door. Check-in is at 4 p.m. and check-out at 11 a.m., the minimum check-in age is 21, and the hotel is smoke-free and does not accept pets. Jacksonville International is about an hour away, with no airport shuttle. During Nights of Lights, from November 21, 2026 to January 18, 2027, this is one of the best-placed hotels in the city: you can walk out to the lights and back without fighting for parking, and rates rise accordingly, especially on weekends, so book early.

Who it suits: first-time visitors who want to walk to everything, couples who want a pool and a reliable full-service hotel, families who need modern rooms, and points travelers. Light sleepers should ask for rooms away from San Marco Avenue traffic. Those after period character should look at the Casa Monica, the St. Francis Inn or the bayfront B&Bs instead.
