Where to Stay in Tirana

Where to stay in Tirana for every kind of trip: the main square, the grand boulevard, the Blloku and stadium area, the streets near the New Bazaar and the outer boulevards, with the best hotel for each.

Tirana is a small capital, and almost every good hotel is within half an hour’s walk of Skanderbeg Square. Choosing the right area still shapes your stay: some streets put the sights on your doorstep, others are quieter, greener or better for drivers. Here is how the city breaks down, with the hotel we recommend in each area.

Skanderbeg Square: for first-timers and short stays

Staying on the main square means you can walk to the Et’hem Bey Mosque, Bunk’Art 2, the House of Leaves and the New Bazaar in minutes, and every day-trip pickup is close by. It is busy and urban, but it is the most convenient base in the city.

Maritim Hotel Plaza Tirana is the splurge and our top pick, a 23-floor tower right on the square with 190 large rooms, a 600-square-metre spa and a bar high above the city. Ask for a high floor facing the square. Free underground parking is a bonus if you rent a car.

The boulevard: for space and greenery

Bulevardi Dëshmorët e Kombit runs south from the square past the Pyramid towards the university and the Grand Park. Hotels here are a short walk from both the square and Blloku, with more space and less bustle.

Rogner Hotel Tirana is the classic choice, set around a Mediterranean garden with an outdoor pool, a tennis court and a beer garden. Book a Garden Side room for quiet. It suits couples and families, especially in the warmer months when the pool is open.

Blloku and Sheshi Italia: for nightlife and a modern feel

Blloku was once the closed quarter of the communist elite; today it is the city’s liveliest area for bars, cafés and restaurants. Sheshi Italia, on its edge beside the national stadium, has the newest big hotels.

Tirana Marriott sits on Sheshi Italia, a short walk from Blloku and the Pyramid, with polished modern rooms, the Terra restaurant and a city-view gym. It suits couples and business travellers who want an international standard close to the nightlife. Parking is off site, so it works best without a car.

Rruga e Dibrës and the New Bazaar: for food lovers

North-east of the square, the streets around Rruga e Dibrës feel more local, with neighbourhood cafés and easy access to Pazari i Ri, the New Bazaar.

Hotel Elisa Tirana, Affiliated by Meliá, is the mid-range pick here: a stylish four-star hotel with the UME Spa, suites with whirlpool tubs and a well-liked breakfast, about fifteen minutes’ walk from the square. It is good value for couples who want comfort without central prices.

The outer boulevards: for drivers and families on a budget

Hotels further out on avenues such as Bulevardi Gjergj Fishta are cheaper and easier to reach by car, at the cost of a taxi or longer walk into the centre.

Hilton Garden Inn Tirana is the value choice, with family rooms and suites with balconies, a breakfast buffet and free covered parking. It is the best base if you plan to drive to Berat, Kruja and Durrës.

Which area is right for you?

Choose Skanderbeg Square for the shortest walks and a first visit. Choose the boulevard for a garden, a pool and a calmer stay. Choose Sheshi Italia and Blloku for nightlife. Choose Rruga e Dibrës for a local feel near the New Bazaar. Choose the outer boulevards if you are driving or keeping costs down. Wherever you stay, the centre is small enough that you will soon know your way around.
