Hotel Indigo Verona – Grand Hotel des Arts is the best choice for travellers arriving by train or who want a stylish base with a bit more space than the old town allows. It occupies a palazzo built in the 1920s for the Reichenbach family, Austrian nobles, on Corso Porta Nuova, the broad avenue that runs from the Porta Nuova gate and the station area to Piazza Bra. The Arena is about 700 metres away, an easy ten-minute walk. As part of IHG’s boutique Indigo brand, the hotel takes its design cues from its neighbourhood and the building’s history. The inner garden and patio are a lovely surprise in the city, a quiet place for a drink, and the Arya Bar and Mixology lounge is one of the more stylish hotel bars in Verona. There is also a restaurant on site, and dogs and cats are welcome.
Location and getting around: Corso Porta Nuova is a straight, tree-lined avenue, so the walk to Piazza Bra and the Arena is simple and flat, and Via Mazzini, Piazza delle Erbe and Juliet’s House are another few minutes beyond. Porta Nuova station is at the far end of the avenue, which is handy for day trips to Lake Garda, Venice or Milan, and buses for the airport leave from the station. Verona airport is around 11 kilometres away.
The rooms: Standard and Premium rooms and One Bedroom Suites, in a contemporary style. Rooms facing the inner garden are quieter than those on the avenue. Ask for a Premium room if you want more space.
Who it suits: rail travellers, couples, business guests and pet owners, and anyone who prefers a boutique feel with the service of an international brand. It is also a good choice for drivers, because it sits outside the tightest part of the old town.
Good to know: there is no on-site parking, but a covered, monitored car park is about 20 metres away. Pets are accepted, one per room, with a nightly fee and a weight limit. IHG One Rewards members can earn and redeem points here.
