Hotel Grand Pacific

Inner Harbour (Belleville Street)

Hotel Grand Pacific

A large, family-friendly harbourfront hotel on Belleville Street, steps from the Parliament Buildings and the Seattle and Port Angeles ferry docks, with a pool, the full Victoria Athletic Club, Fathom restaurant and the Courtyard Café.

★★★★★

Hotel Grand Pacific is the most practical of the big Inner Harbour hotels, a modern, well-run property at 463 Belleville Street on the south side of the harbour. Its location is hard to beat: the Parliament Buildings are next door, the Royal BC Museum and the Empress are a few minutes' walk away, and the terminals for the passenger ferries from Seattle and Port Angeles are right on Belleville Street, so you can walk off the boat and into the lobby. What sets it apart for families and active travellers is the Victoria Athletic Club, a full fitness club inside the hotel with classes and personal training, alongside a swimming pool that makes rainy days with children much easier. Dining is at Fathom, the hotel's restaurant, which also hosts live music, and the casual Courtyard Café, with in-room dining as well. There is a skin and laser spa on site, free WiFi and outdoor spaces, and the hotel runs a green practices programme. Rooms range from city and courtyard views to harbour-view rooms and suites looking across the water to the Empress and the seaplanes.

Location and getting around: everything on a first-time list is within an easy walk. The Parliament tour and the Royal BC Museum are next door, the Empress and the whale-watching and seaplane docks are five minutes away around the harbour, and Chinatown and Market Square are about fifteen minutes on foot. Beacon Hill Park is a short walk south, and the Fisherman's Wharf floating village is a pleasant stroll west. For Butchart and the Malahat you will need a car or a tour, which can pick up nearby.

Rooms and who it suits: Hotel Grand Pacific suits families who want a pool and a central base, fitness-minded travellers who will use the athletic club, and anyone arriving on the Clipper or the Coho who wants to walk straight to the hotel. Couples should ask for a harbour-view room facing the Empress, which is lovely after dark when the Parliament lights come on. It is also a popular conference hotel, so the lobby can be busy on weekdays.

Good to know: parking is available on site for a fee, so confirm the current rate and check whether the pet policy suits you before you book. Fathom's live music evenings are worth checking. Rates are mid-to-upper range, often a little below the Empress for a similar harbour outlook, and best in the quieter months from November to March.
