Vilnius is compact, and almost every sensible base puts Cathedral Square within a fifteen-minute walk. The choice comes down to atmosphere, budget and what you want outside your door: Baroque lanes and courtyards, a smart nineteenth-century boulevard, modern towers across the river, or easy access to the trains. Here are the areas that work best for a first visit, and the hotel we would pick in each.
The Old Town: for atmosphere
Staying inside the Old Town means stepping out into church bells, courtyards and cobbled streets, and walking home after dinner under lit towers. It is the obvious choice for a short break, a romantic trip or a winter visit. The downsides are higher prices, limited car access and some evening noise on the busiest streets. Our splurge is Hotel Pacai, set in a Baroque palace of 1677 on Didžioji Street, with frescoes on display, Restaurant PACAI and a spa with sauna and hammam. For classic five-star comfort a little further along the same street, the Radisson Collection Astorija has 119 rooms, a French-Lithuanian brasserie and a spa, with the Town Hall on the doorstep.
Gedimino Avenue and the New Town: for convenience
West of Cathedral Square, Gedimino Avenue is the city’s main boulevard, lined with shops, cafés and government buildings, and it is a short, flat walk to the cathedral. Hotels here tend to offer more space for the money and easier access by car. Novotel Vilnius Centre, at Gedimino 16, is our pick for families, with rooms that sleep three or four, the WINESTONE restaurant and a welcome for pets.
Across the Neris: for modern comfort and views
On the north bank of the river, the glass towers of the business district look straight across to Gediminas Tower and the Old Town. It is quieter at night and easier for drivers. The Courtyard by Marriott Vilnius City Center, Marriott’s first hotel in Lithuania, has 199 modern rooms, a restaurant terrace facing the castle, a free gym and on-site parking, and the Old Town is a pleasant walk over the bridge.
The station and the Gate of Dawn: for value and day trips
The southern edge of the Old Town, near the train and bus stations, is the best area for budget stays and early departures to Trakai or the Hill of Crosses. Panorama Hotel, about four hundred metres from the Gate of Dawn, offers good-value rooms, many with views over the roofs, newer Sky rooms and parking. Walk through the Gate of Dawn and you are in the Old Town in minutes.
Matching base to trip
For a romantic weekend, choose Hotel Pacai. For classic comfort in the thick of things, the Astorija. For a family trip, the Novotel. If you are driving or want modern rooms with views, the Courtyard. For a budget trip with day trips planned, Panorama Hotel.
Practical tips
Rates rise around big events and in December, when the Christmas tree draws visitors to Cathedral Square, so book early for those periods. Ask about parking if you are driving, since the Old Town has limited car access. Check whether breakfast is included, and in winter a hotel with a sauna or spa makes cold days of walking far more pleasant.
