The Ansel Adams Gallery

Yosemite through the eyes of its great photographer

The Ansel Adams Gallery is one of the oldest family businesses in the national parks and the most rewarding place in Yosemite Valley for anyone with a camera. It began in 1902 as Best's Studio, opened by Harry Best, a landscape painter and political cartoonist, after a camping and painting trip to the valley; Ansel Adams married into the Best family, and the gallery has been run by the Adams family ever since. Today it sits in the Village Mall in Yosemite Village between the Exploration Center and the post office, and it is an authorized National Park Service concessioner. Inside you will find a collection of original Ansel Adams photographs, the black-and-white images of Half Dome, El Capitan and winter storms that shaped how the world sees Yosemite, alongside work by more than twenty contemporary artists the gallery represents and rotating exhibitions. The shop side sells books, handcrafts, fine art prints and posters, and it is the best place in the park for photography books and Yosemite art. For photographers, the education program is the real draw: the gallery lists free photo walks on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, plus paid day classes, workshops and private guides. Schedules change by season, so check before you plan around a walk. The gallery is open seven days a week, closed only on Thanksgiving and Christmas, and entry is free. In winter it is a warm place to linger between walks, and seeing Adams's snow-bound valley prints before stepping outside into the real thing is a fine way to sharpen your own eye.

Why visit. Adams spent decades photographing Yosemite, and his images — Clearing Winter Storm above all — did as much as any law to make the park a symbol of American wilderness. Standing in front of an original print, then walking out to Cook's Meadow or Tunnel View to look at the same granite, connects art and place in a way few galleries can. Even visitors who are not photographers come away noticing light, shadow and weather differently for the rest of the trip.

Making the most of it. Check the gallery's calendar before your trip and, if a free photo walk falls on your dates, join it: the walks are led by working photographers and focus on how to see and compose in the valley. If you want more depth, book a day class or a private guide, especially in winter when snow and storms create the conditions Adams loved. Allow time to browse the original prints, which are kept in a separate area, and ask staff about the history of the studio. The gallery is a few steps from the Exploration Center and the Yosemite Museum, so it fits naturally into a morning in Yosemite Village.

Who it suits. Photographers of every level, art lovers, couples looking for a meaningful souvenir, and anyone curious about the man whose name is attached to so much of the park. Families with young children may prefer a shorter visit. Pair it with sunrise at Tunnel View, the Cook's Meadow Loop and the Yosemite Museum.
