Ban Jelačić Square, city centre

Hotel Dubrovnik

A Zagreb institution right on Ban Jelačić Square, welcoming guests since 1929. 214 rooms and 8 suites, a historic café, a steak house and the best possible position for Advent, the Upper Town and the market.

★★★★★

Despite its name, the Hotel Dubrovnik is pure Zagreb. It has stood on the corner of Ban Jelačić Square and Gajeva street since 1929, and for generations it has been the meeting place of the city, with its café windows looking straight onto the square, the trams and the statue of Ban Jelačić. Few hotels anywhere have a more central position: Dolac market is two minutes away, the cathedral five, the funicular to the Upper Town about ten, and the Zagreb 360 observation deck is just across the square. The hotel is large and well run, with 214 rooms and 8 suites ranging from compact rooms on the quieter Gajeva side to rooms with views of the square. Kavana Dubrovnik, the historic café, is a classic spot for coffee and cake, the Lobby Bar serves drinks and light bites, and the American Steak and Grill House offers a hearty dinner without leaving the building. It is a hotel for people who want to spend their time in the city rather than in their room, and it is especially popular in December, when the Advent stalls and lights fill the square below. Expect a classic four-star style rather than boutique design, and very good value for the location.

Location and getting around: the hotel is at Ljudevita Gaja 1, on the corner of Ban Jelačić Square, the hub of the tram network. Almost every tram line passes the square, so the main station, the Lower Town museums and the line to Mihaljevac for the Sljeme cable car are all easy. The tour meeting point at Zrinjevac is a five-minute walk south.

Rooms: rooms are traditional and comfortable. Square-view rooms are the most memorable, especially during Advent, but they can be livelier at night; rooms on the Gajeva side and higher floors are quieter. Suites suit families and longer stays.

Who it suits: first-time visitors, Advent visitors, families who want everything within walking distance, and travellers arriving without a car.

Good to know: the hotel sits in the pedestrian zone, so arriving by car takes planning; ask the hotel about the nearest public garages before you travel. Breakfast may or may not be included depending on your rate. From 28 November 2026 to 7 January 2027, Advent stalls and events surround the square, so book early for December weekends.
