Palace Hotel Zagreb

Lower Town, Strossmayer Square (Lenuci Horseshoe)

Palace Hotel Zagreb

A Secession-era palace on Strossmayer Square, welcoming guests since 1907 and often called Zagreb’s first true hotel. Art Nouveau rooms, a frescoed café serving štrukli, and the Lenuci Horseshoe parks outside the door.

★★★★★

The Palace Hotel occupies the Schlessinger Palace, a handsome building of 1891 on Strossmayer Square, and it has been receiving guests since 1907, which makes it one of the oldest hotels in the city and, by many accounts, Zagreb’s first purpose-run hotel. It sits in the middle of the Lenuci Horseshoe, the U-shaped chain of green squares and parks that defines the Lower Town, facing the gardens and the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, and within a few minutes’ walk of the main square. The style is Art Nouveau with contemporary comforts: 122 rooms in several categories, from compact Comfort rooms to Superior rooms and the grand Suite Diplomatique, many with high ceilings and period details, and artworks by local artists displayed throughout the building. On the ground floor, the café, bar and bistro, decorated with Habsburg-era frescoes and chandeliers, is one of the most beautiful rooms in Zagreb, and its menu includes štrukli, the cheese-filled pastry of the nearby Zagorje hills. Service is personal: the concierge helps with tickets for concerts and museums, tours and restaurant tips, and the hotel can arrange transfers to the airport or bus station and excursions out of the city.

Location and getting around: the hotel is at Trg J. J. Strossmayera 10, between Zrinjevac and the main station. Ban Jelačić Square is about five minutes on foot, the Zrinjevac meeting point for the Plitvice day tour is around the corner, and the funicular to the Upper Town is about fifteen minutes away. Trams run along the edge of the square towards the station and the centre.

Rooms: rooms facing the square look over the parks and are the most atmospheric, while courtyard rooms are the quietest and, on clear days, have views towards Sljeme. Bathrooms generally have both tubs and showers.

Who it suits: travellers who want history and character at a fair price, couples on a winter break and anyone who wants to step straight out into the parks where much of Advent takes place, from 28 November 2026 to 7 January 2027.

Good to know: the hotel has secured parking under video surveillance with an optional valet service for a fee, but spaces are limited, so reserve ahead if you are driving. Breakfast is a buffet in the restaurant and may be charged separately depending on your rate. Room service, laundry and transfers are available for an extra charge.
