The Oberoi Amarvilas

Taj East Gate Road

The Oberoi Amarvilas

A Mughal-style palace hotel about 600 metres from the Taj Mahal, where every room and suite looks straight at the monument. This is Agra's splurge, with a spa, a temperature-controlled pool, and dining built around Taj views.

★★★★★

The Oberoi Amarvilas is the hotel people picture when they imagine waking up beside the Taj Mahal. Set on Taj East Gate Road, about 600 metres from the monument and reached by a private golf buggy, it is built as a Mughal-inspired palace of courtyards, fountains, terraces and domed pavilions. Its calling card is the view: the hotel states that every room and suite has an uninterrupted outlook toward the Taj Mahal. For a short stay in Agra, it makes the sightseeing feel effortless, because the most famous building in India is part of the hotel's daily rhythm.

Location and getting around

The Taj Mahal is close enough that you can reach the East Gate in minutes, and guests commonly time their visit for the early hours when the queue is short and the light is soft. Agra Fort, Itmad-ud-Daulah and Mehtab Bagh are short drives away, and the hotel can arrange cars and guides. Remember the Taj is closed on Fridays. Agra airport is a military airbase, so hotel cars stop at the main gate and a coach runs to the terminal for a small cash fee, so carry small rupee notes.

The rooms and the rest

The six room types run from the Premier Room, with or without a balcony, through Deluxe and Luxury Suites to the Kohinoor Suite. Choose a balcony if the view matters most to you. The spa has a couples' suite with Taj views, and the pool is a calm Mughal-style space with shaded loungers.

Dining includes Bellevue for Italian-inspired and international dishes, Esphahan for Mughal cuisine with live music, and a lounge terrace with views. The bar is currently being reimagined and is closed, so check before arrival if a drink on the terrace is part of your plan.

Who it suits and what to know: it is perfect for honeymoons, anniversaries and travellers who want a refuge from Agra's bustle between sightseeing outings. Experiences include private balcony dinners, a historian-led Mughal session and a pietra dura craft session. Rates are at the top of the market and rise in the cooler season from October to March, so book well ahead. Check-in is at 2 pm and check-out at noon, and the hotel is non-smoking apart from limited Premier Room with Balcony options.
