Alexandria Corniche

A free seafront stroll along the Mediterranean

The Corniche is the great seafront road of Alexandria, curving along the Mediterranean for around twenty kilometres from the Citadel of Qaitbay in the west to Montaza in the east. Beside it runs a promenade where families stroll, fishermen cast their lines from the sea wall and vendors sell snacks and tea. Along the way you pass the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the Stanley Bridge, old hotels and apartment blocks from the city's cosmopolitan age, and beaches. It is free to walk, and you can do it in pieces: a sunset stroll near the Eastern Harbour, a seafood dinner by the fishing port or a long ride by taxi or tram. The city has changed along its seafront, but the sea air and the sense of an open horizon remain.

Where to walk

The most popular stretch runs between the Citadel of Qaitbay and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, taking in the Eastern Harbour and Saad Zaghloul Square on the way. Allow about an hour for the full stretch at a leisurely pace. Further east, the Stanley Bridge area and the beaches around Montaza are better for views and for a longer ride. Benches, cafes and shaded corners appear along the way.

Making the most of it

Late afternoon is the best time, when the air cools and the light turns golden. Locals fill the promenade after dark in summer, so the atmosphere is friendly but busy. Watch traffic carefully, as crossing the main road can be hectic, and use crossings or tunnels where they exist. Keep valuables out of sight in crowded spots, and drink bottled water.

Other ways to see it

A horse carriage ride is a popular local treat along the seafront, and prices should be agreed before you climb in. Taxis and ride-hailing cars are cheap for covering longer distances, and the old city trams run on parallel routes inland. Combine the Corniche with a seafood meal, a coffee at a historic cafe and a visit to the Citadel to see the sea from both sides.
