Two bases work well for the Great Barrier Reef and the rainforest: Cairns, with the most transport links and choice, and Port Douglas, about an hour north, which is quieter and more resort-like. Where you sleep decides how much you drive, how you spend your evenings and which sea you meet first, so it is worth choosing with your plans in mind.
Cairns Esplanade: the central choice
The Esplanade is the waterfront strip beside the Trinity Inlet, with the free lagoon, a long boardwalk and restaurants across the road. It is a short walk to the Reef Fleet Terminal and Marlin Wharf, where most reef and island cruises depart, and to the railway station for Kuranda. The best-placed upscale hotel is Crystalbrook Riley, a five-star resort with a pool, spa and rooms with sea views, two minutes from the waterfront. Mantra Esplanade is a four-star mid-range alternative with balconies, an outdoor pool and free parking close to the same area.
Cairns North: value near the water
Cairns North sits just beyond the Esplanade, with quieter streets and lower prices. Bay Village Tropical Retreat on Lake Street is about two minutes' walk from the Esplanade and offers standard rooms, studios and apartments up to three bedrooms, which suits families and groups. It is a short drive from the airport and a good base if you are watching your budget and spending your days on tours.
Port Douglas: the resort base
Port Douglas is the place for a slower holiday, with Four Mile Beach, Macrossan Street cafes and weekly markets. The Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort sits directly on the beach with lagoon pools, a swim-up bar, a spa and golf, and is the classic splurge. Pullman Port Douglas Sea Temple Resort and Spa offers spacious apartments and villas near the golf course and a short walk from the beach, though you will want a car or taxis for town. From Port Douglas, reef boats, the Low Isles, Mossman Gorge and the Daintree are all closer than from Cairns.
Choosing by trip style
For a first visit with several reef and rainforest day trips, stay in Cairns: tours, trains and boats are easiest from here. For a honeymoon or a relaxed family week, stay in Port Douglas and take day trips from there. If your itinerary is split, spend two nights in Cairns for the Kuranda and island days and then move north for the Daintree and the beach.
Stinger season and swimming
From roughly November to May, the sea at many beaches is dangerous, so check that your hotel has a pool and know where the nearest stinger net or lagoon is. Cairns has the free Esplanade Lagoon, and Port Douglas has the net at Four Mile Beach and resort pools. This matters most for families with children who will want to swim every day.
Budget and timing
Prices rise in the dry months from June to October and during school holidays, when the best rooms sell out early. The wet season from November to April is often cheaper and quieter, though humid and with the occasional cancelled tour. Booking a hotel that includes parking or a tour desk, as Mantra Esplanade does, can save money and time. Whichever base you choose, confirm check-in times if you have an early reef departure and ask about luggage storage.
