Art Deco White City

Hotel Le Doge

A 1930s Art Deco mansion turned Relais and Chateaux boutique hotel in the White City, with just sixteen rooms and suites, a Moroccan restaurant and a small hammam-style spa.

★★★★★

Hotel Le Doge is the place to sleep inside the Art Deco story. Built in the 1930s in the district known as the White City, it keeps its period architecture and interiors, and today it is a small Relais and Chateaux member with only sixteen rooms and suites, ranging from thirty-square-metre standard rooms to fifty-square-metre suites. Legend says an Italian entrepreneur built it for his wife. It is intimate, stylish and very different from the big towers.

Location and character: the hotel sits in Casablanca's Art Deco quarter, where the avenues are lined with 1930s buildings, so you can step out and walk to Art Deco facades, cafes and the busy centre. It is a boutique place with an attentive, private feel rather than a resort, and the rooms are quiet and individually decorated in period style. A rooftop on the fifth floor and a small spa add to the experience.

Dining and spa: Le Jasmine serves traditional Moroccan cuisine and the Petit Spa offers hammam rituals, eucalyptus steam baths and argan oil massages. This is a good place to learn about Moroccan cooking and wellbeing without leaving the hotel. The official page does not mention a pool, so do not book it for swimming.

Who it suits: couples, architecture lovers and travellers who prefer character to scale. Because it has so few rooms, it books out early, and the best rooms are in demand in spring and autumn. It is a taxi ride from the Hassan II Mosque and the Corniche, but close to the central sights, the Central Market and Place Mohammed V. Ask about quiet rooms, breakfast and airport transfers when you reserve. Because the street setting is historic rather than purpose-built, access by car can be tight, so arrange transfers in advance and travel light. Spring and autumn are the best seasons to stay, with comfortable evenings for the rooftop.
