Ark Encounter

A life-size ark in the Kentucky hills, forty minutes from Cincinnati

Rising out of farmland beside Interstate 75 in Williamstown, Kentucky, the Ark Encounter is one of the most talked-about attractions in the region, whatever your beliefs. Built by the Christian ministry Answers in Genesis and opened in 2016, it is a life-size wooden ark based on the dimensions given in the Book of Genesis, about 510 feet long, and the sheer scale of the timber structure is the first thing that strikes visitors. Inside, three decks of exhibits present the biblical flood account from the ministry's young-earth creationist viewpoint, with animal cages, living quarters, models and films. Outside, the grounds include the Ararat Ridge Zoo, a restaurant, a playground and other attractions, and the park stages free Christmas events on select evenings in the holiday season. It is a full-day trip from Cincinnati, and the Ark says to allow at least five to six hours. Many visitors pair it with the sister Creation Museum, under an hour away.

Hours for November and December 2026: the Ark Encounter opens Monday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm and is closed on Sundays. It is also closed on Thanksgiving Day (26 November), Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The parking booths open thirty minutes before the Ark, and the incoming gates close thirty minutes before closing time, so do not arrive late in the afternoon. Christmas at the Ark Encounter, a free evening event, runs on select nights through the season; check the Christmas page for the 2026 dates.

Tickets and parking: buy tickets online on the Ark's own site and print them or show them on your phone. Children 4 and under are free but still need a ticket, and discounts exist for military, first responders, groups and local residents. Parking costs fifteen dollars for a standard car, paid on entry, and shuttle buses carry everyone from the lot to the Ark, since private cars cannot drive up to it. Combination tickets with the Creation Museum are offered.

Getting there and making it count: the Ark is at 1 Ark Encounter Drive in Williamstown, just off Interstate 75 at exit 154, roughly forty minutes south of downtown Cincinnati by car; there is no practical public transport. Start early, see the three decks in the morning while you are fresh, then lunch on site and spend the afternoon at the zoo. The Ark is wheelchair and stroller friendly, and wheelchairs, strollers, wagons and scooters can be rented. You can leave and return the same day with a reentry wristband.
