Where to Stay in Cozumel

A neighborhood guide to Cozumel hotels: downtown San Miguel for walkability, the north hotel zone for beach value and the south coast for a resort on the reef.

Cozumel has three practical places to stay, and the choice is mostly between walking to dinner and waking up beside the water. The island is small, and taxis connect the zones quickly, so none of the choices cuts you off from the sights, but each gives a different rhythm to the trip.

Downtown San Miguel

The town runs along the waterfront boulevard, with the plaza, the island museum, dive shops, taco stands and restaurants within a few blocks, and the ferry from Playa del Carmen arrives in the middle of it. Staying here means you can walk to dinner, shop and sunset drinks and use taxis for beaches and parks. The trade-off is that there is no hotel beach, and the boulevard can be busy. Casa Mexicana Cozumel is the mid-range option, with 88 rooms, a pool with a waterfall, a free breakfast and a five-minute walk to the plaza. Flamingo Hotel Cozumel is the budget option on Calle 6 Norte, within about ten minutes of the maritime terminal, with balcony rooms and a rooftop terrace. Both are good for first-timers, divers and anyone arriving by ferry or without a car.

The north hotel zone

North of town along the Playa San Juan highway, hotels sit on small beaches in a calmer, flatter setting, around ten minutes by car from the airport. You will take a taxi or a rental to town, but you gain beach access, bigger grounds and generally better value. Hotel B Cozumel is a beachfront mid-range choice with a pool, hot tub, spa, free breakfast, free parking and free bicycles, and it is not adults-only. Hotel Playa Azul Cozumel is a quiet beach hotel with large rooms, a private beach, two restaurants, a children's pool and a free buffet breakfast, though it has no elevators. This zone suits families, couples who want a beach and travelers with a rental car.

The south coast and marine park

South of town, the road toward Chankanaab and the reef runs past the biggest resorts, set on private beaches facing the Cozumel Reefs National Park. The InterContinental Presidente Cozumel is the splurge here: a renovated five-star resort with a protected snorkeling lagoon, an on-site dive center, an infinity pool and a spa. You are about a half-hour from the airport and not within walking distance of town, but the reef is at your door, which suits divers, honeymooners and anyone who wants a full resort stay. Chankanaab Park is only a few minutes away by car.

How to choose

If you like to wander, eat out and keep costs down, stay downtown. If you want a beach, space and an easier pace, choose the north zone. If you are here for the reef or a special occasion and are happy to stay on property, choose the south coast. Cruise visitors do not need a hotel, though a day pass can be a good alternative on a port day.

Booking tips

Book early for December to April, when the weather is at its best and rates rise. Check what breakfast and parking are included in your rate, and ask for a quiet room if noise from the road or air-conditioning units might bother you. If you plan a lot of boat trips, ask whether your hotel can arrange early pickups, and confirm the policy on late checkout if your flight leaves in the evening.
