Al Zubarah is Qatar’s first and only UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it is the best place to understand the country before oil. On the north-west coast, about a hundred kilometres from Doha, lie the excavated remains of a walled pearling and trading town that flourished in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries before it was abandoned. The town itself is now an archaeological site of low walls, streets and houses in the sand, and nearby stands Al Zubarah Fort, a square fort with sturdy round and rectangular towers, built in the twentieth century and now home to displays about the site. This private tour, run by a Doha operator, starts with the fort and continues through the landmarks of the north with an English-speaking guide. Pickup and drop-off, water, tea and coffee are included, and the group is limited to six.
How it works: the tour lasts about four hours, with pickup from your hotel, an address or the airport arranged on WhatsApp. Cancellation is free until 48 hours before, but rescheduling is not possible, and meals are not included. The listing names Al Zubarah Fort as the main stop but not the other stops, so ask the guide what is planned.
What to expect: a lot of the time is spent driving through flat, open desert, and the fort and ruins are exposed, so bring a hat and water. The landscape is stark and beautiful.
Making the most of it: go in the morning in the cooler months. Read a little about the pearling era first, or visit the National Museum of Qatar before the trip.
