Chefchaouen Blue City Day Trip

The blue mountain town, as a long day from Fes

Chefchaouen, the Blue City, sits in the Rif mountains in the north of Morocco, and its medina is painted in shades of blue from pale sky to deep indigo. Wandering its lanes is a delight, with steps and archways and doorways picked out in white and blue, small squares and shops selling woven blankets, goat cheese and crafts. The town has a relaxed, almost sleepy feel compared with Fes, and it is a favourite of photographers. Day trips from Fes are popular, but the distance is real, with about four hours each way on the road, so the day is long and tiring. Small-group tours leave early and stop for views in the Rif foothills, then give you a few hours in the town. If you can, an overnight stay allows a more peaceful visit, but a day trip is workable if you accept that most of the time is spent travelling.

Think carefully before booking. The outbound drive crosses scenic country, climbing into forested mountains, and the town has a lovely setting beneath twin peaks. Once there, a local guide or your own wandering can fill the time. The main square, Plaza Uta el-Hammam, has a kasbah with a small museum and a garden, plus cafes where you can sit with mint tea. Alleyways beyond the square lead up to quieter residential streets where the blue is most vivid.

The town is best enjoyed slowly. Walk uphill toward the Spanish Mosque viewpoint if you have energy, or simply browse the stalls and eat at a terrace restaurant. Haggle politely for crafts, and ask before photographing residents in their doorways. The weather in the mountains can be cooler than Fes, so bring a light jacket in autumn and winter, and sun protection in summer. Tours differ in price and quality: shared minibuses are cheaper but tight on time, while private cars give you flexibility and comfort. Check the departure time, the length of free time in the town and whether there is a lunch stop. A return in the evening can be late, usually after dark. Travelling by road in the Rif can be bumpy, so those prone to motion sickness should prepare. If you are travelling on to Tangier or Casablanca, many operators sell one-way transfers that stop in Chefchaouen.
