Chillon Castle

The medieval castle on the water near Montreux

Chillon Castle seems to float on the lake. Built on a rocky islet just off the shore between Montreux and Villeneuve, at the eastern end of Lake Geneva, it has guarded the route along the water for close to a thousand years, and for much of the Middle Ages it was a residence of the Counts of Savoy. Today it is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Europe and the most visited historic monument in Switzerland. A visit takes you through a sequence of courtyards, great halls with painted walls and beamed ceilings, bedrooms, a chapel, latrines hanging over the water and towers with views across the lake to the French shore and the mountains. The most famous room is the vaulted dungeon cut into the rock, where the reformer François Bonivard was chained in the 16th century. His story inspired Lord Byron’s poem The Prisoner of Chillon in 1816, and Byron’s name, carved into one of the pillars, is still pointed out to visitors. Archaeological finds and medieval features are displayed along the way. It is a wonderful day out from Geneva, especially combined with the lakeside promenade in Montreux.

Planning the visit: from November to February the castle opens from 10:00 to 17:00, with last admission at 16:00. In March and October it opens from 09:30 to 18:00, and from April to September from 09:00 to 19:00. It is closed only on 25 December and 1 January. An audio guide can be hired on site for a few francs, or you can download the castle app; both bring the rooms to life. The Tiqets entry ticket saves queuing at the ticket desk in busy periods.

Getting there from Geneva: take a train along the lake to Montreux, which takes a little over an hour, then bus 201 towards Villeneuve to the Chillon stop in front of the castle, with buses every 10 to 20 minutes. Hourly S5 regional trains also stop at Veytaux-Chillon station, a six-minute walk away. In good weather, walk the lakeside promenade from Montreux, about 4 kilometres or 45 minutes past flowerbeds and palm trees. Boats also stop at Chillon in season.

Making the most of it: allow about two hours inside, and arrive in the morning to beat tour groups. Look for Byron’s name in the dungeon. For the classic photograph, walk a few minutes along the shore towards Villeneuve. Combine the castle with Chaplin’s World above Vevey for a full Riviera day.
