Where to Stay in Hamburg

A neighbourhood-by-neighbourhood guide to choosing a base in Hamburg, with the trade-offs of each area and our hotel pick for every budget.

Hamburg is a big city, but the areas that matter to visitors are close together and well linked by the U-Bahn and S-Bahn, so there is no wrong answer. The real question is what you want outside your door: lake views and elegant shopping, the new waterfront, harbour life and nightlife, or easy train connections at a good price. Here is how the main areas compare.

The Inner Alster and Neustadt: classic and elegant

The streets around the Binnenalster and the Jungfernstieg are Hamburg at its most polished, with grand hotels, smart shops, the Rathaus and the Alster steamers on the doorstep. It is the most central area for sightseeing and the safest choice for a first visit if your budget allows. Our pick: the Fairmont Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten, a grand hotel since 1897 right on the lake, with lake-view rooms, a classic bar and a spa. It is the city’s top splurge.

HafenCity: the new waterfront

Built on the old docks, HafenCity puts you within walking distance of the Elbphilharmonie, the Speicherstadt, Miniatur Wunderland, the Maritime Museum and Port des Lumières. It is modern, clean and calm at night, with the Überseequartier U-Bahn station for quick trips to the centre. Building work continues in places, and evenings are quieter than in older districts. Our pick: the 25hours Hotel HafenCity, a playful sailor-themed design hotel with a rooftop sauna, good restaurants and bikes to borrow.

St. Pauli and the harbour: views and nightlife

St. Pauli runs from the Landungsbrücken, where the harbour cruises and ferries leave, up to the Reeperbahn with its theatres, clubs and bars. Staying here means harbour views, the Sunday Fischmarkt and plenty of life after dark, but weekends are loud close to the Reeperbahn itself. Our pick: the Empire Riverside Hotel, a Chipperfield-designed tower above the Elbe with river-view rooms and the 20up skyline bar, set slightly back from the busiest streets.

The Hauptbahnhof and Altstadt: practical and well connected

The streets around the main station are ideal if you arrive by train, plan day trips or want good value close to everything. The Kunsthalle, the shopping street Mönckebergstraße and the Binnenalster are a few minutes away, and the Speicherstadt is a short walk. The immediate station area can feel busy and a little rough late at night, so choose a hotel on a quieter side street. Our pick: HENRI Hotel Hamburg Downtown, a retro-styled hotel in a brick Kontorhaus with a free evening supper from Monday to Thursday and a rooftop sauna.

Sternschanze and the edge of St. Pauli: young and affordable

The Schanze is Hamburg’s creative quarter, full of cafés, bars, street art and independent shops, with good transport and lower prices than the centre. It is lively in the evenings and less polished, which is exactly why many visitors love it. Our pick: Superbude St. Pauli, a cheerful design hotel and hostel with private bathrooms in every room, an organic breakfast buffet and family and group rooms.

How to choose

For a first visit with a comfortable budget, stay by the Alster or in HafenCity and walk to most sights. For harbour views and nightlife, choose St. Pauli. For day trips and easy arrivals, stay near the main station. On a budget or travelling as a group, the Schanze offers the best value and the most local feel.

Practical tips

Book early for summer weekends, major concerts and big trade fairs, when rates jump and good rooms disappear. Winter, apart from the Christmas market weeks, brings the best prices. Parking in central Hamburg is expensive, so arrive by train if you can, and check that your hotel is near a U-Bahn or S-Bahn station.
