Bled Castle stands on a sheer rock above the northern shore of the lake, and its terraces give the view everyone comes for: the island church floating below, the lake spread out and the Julian Alps beyond. First recorded in the early eleventh century, it is considered the oldest castle in Slovenia. A visit is compact and varied. The museum traces the history of Bled and the castle; the Castle Printing Works recreates a Gutenberg-style press, where you can watch a page printed; and in the Wine Cellar you can fill, cork and seal your own bottle of wine. There is a small chapel, a gallery, a room of hands-on experiments for children and a restaurant with a terrace over the lake, which is a lovely place for lunch. The castle is open every day, with longer hours from April to October and winter hours from November to March. Tickets are sold at the castle and online, with family discounts.
How to visit: walk up from the lake in about twenty minutes on steep paths, or drive or take a bus to the car park near the top. Buy tickets online in summer to skip the queue at the gate.
What to expect: the castle is spread over two courtyards on different levels, with stairs and some uneven ground. The terrace views are the highlight, so pick a clear day if you can. Allow about an hour and a half, more if you eat at the restaurant.
Making the most of it: visit in the afternoon after the morning boat to the island, so you see the lake from both levels. In winter the castle opens early and the views across a snowy lake are worth the cold.
