Ljubljana Castle

The hilltop fortress with the best view in the city

Ljubljana Castle has watched over the city from its wooded hill for centuries, and today it is the best place to understand how Ljubljana fits together: the river curling below, the old town tucked between hill and water, and on clear days the jagged line of the Kamnik and Julian Alps on the horizon. The present walls and towers date mostly from the late medieval period, rebuilt after earthquakes and adapted over the years as a fortress, a prison and a barracks. The central courtyard, the paths and the castle cafes are free to enter. A ticket adds the Outlook Tower, the permanent exhibition on Slovenian history, the Museum of Puppetry and the old chapel with its painted coats of arms. Most visitors ride the glass funicular up from Krekov trg at the edge of the market, a ride of about a minute, and walk down through the trees. The Tiqets venue page sells entry together with the Ljubljana Card and a guided city and castle tour.

How to visit: take the funicular up from Krekov trg, next to the Central Market, or walk up one of the paths from the old town in about fifteen to twenty minutes; the climb is steady rather than steep. Start with the Outlook Tower for the panorama, then the history exhibition, which runs from prehistoric finds to independence in 1991 and gives useful context for the rest of your trip. Families should not miss the Museum of Puppetry, a reminder of Slovenia’s strong puppet-theatre tradition.

What to expect: the courtyard hosts concerts, exhibitions and seasonal events, and in December it becomes part of the city’s festive programme. There are cafes and a fine-dining restaurant on site, so you can make an afternoon of it. Allow two hours with the exhibitions, less if you only want the view. The funicular is accessible, and the courtyard is largely level once you are up.

Making the most of it: go late in the day for warm light over the rooftops, or early on a clear winter morning when the Alps are sharpest. If you plan several museums plus buses and a boat cruise, the Ljubljana Card includes the funicular and castle entry and usually pays for itself.
