Plečnik House

The home of the architect who made Ljubljana

Jože Plečnik is the reason Ljubljana looks the way it does. Between the two world wars he redesigned the city’s riverbanks, bridges, market, parks and squares, and in 2021 his works in Ljubljana were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as an example of human-centred urban design. Plečnik House, in the Trnovo district just south of the old town, is where he lived and worked for decades, and it has been preserved much as he left it: the round winter garden, the studio, the bedroom and the kitchen, full of his furniture, models, tools and personal objects. Next door, an exhibition introduces his career in Ljubljana, Vienna and Prague. The house itself can be seen only on a guided tour, which starts on the hour and is limited to a handful of people, so it feels intimate rather than museum-like. It is run by the Museum and Galleries of Ljubljana and is closed on Mondays.

How to visit: walk south from the old town along the river through Trnovo, about fifteen minutes, past Plečnik’s Trnovo Bridge and church. Book a tour slot online, since groups are small and fill up on weekends.

What to expect: the tour lasts about an hour and covers the private rooms and the studio, with stories about Plečnik’s simple, devout life. The exhibition next door can be seen at your own pace before or after.

Making the most of it: visit early in your trip, then look for his touches as you explore: the columns of the Triple Bridge, the market colonnades, the National and University Library and the Jakopič Promenade in Tivoli Park.
