Where to Stay in Ljubljana

How to choose your base for Ljubljana and Lake Bled, from a rooftop-pool design hotel in the old town to an Art Nouveau classic, a quiet mid-range pick, a budget base near the stations and a lakeside grand hotel.

Ljubljana is compact, so almost any central hotel puts the old town within a ten-minute walk. The real choices are atmosphere, budget and how many day trips you plan. Many visitors also split their stay, with two or three nights in the capital and one or two at Lake Bled. Here are the areas that work best, and the hotel we would pick in each.

The Old Town: for romance

Staying among the riverside lanes below the castle means stepping out to cafes and bridges and walking home along the lit Ljubljanica after dinner. It is the obvious choice for couples and short breaks. The downsides are higher prices, small rooms in old buildings and no cars, so luggage needs planning. Our pick is Vander Urbani Resort, a sixteen-room design hotel in old townhouses steps from the river, with a rooftop infinity pool, a respected restaurant and breakfast included. Book early: it fills fast in summer and December.

The City Centre: for convenience

Just north and west of the river, around Prešeren Square, Miklošičeva cesta and Slovenska cesta, the centre has the bigger hotels, easy taxi access and the stations within walking distance, while the old town is still minutes away. The Grand Hotel Union Eurostars, an Art Nouveau landmark from 1905 a minute from Prešeren Square, is our favourite all-rounder, with a grand cafe, a wine cellar and a pool with castle views. For a quieter, better-value stay, Hotel Cubo on Slovenska cesta offers calm design rooms in a 1930s building, a good restaurant, breakfast included and, unusually for the centre, private parking.

Tabor and the station side: for value

East and north of the centre, around Tabor, prices drop and the bus and train stations are a short walk away, which suits anyone planning several day trips by public transport. B&B Hotel Ljubljana Park is the budget pick, with simple modern rooms, a rooftop terrace and the old town about ten minutes on foot. It is functional rather than charming, but it frees up budget for the caves and Bled.

Lake Bled: for the view

Bled is busy with day-trippers by day, but stay overnight and you get the lake to yourself at dawn and dusk. Grand Hotel Toplice, on the shore since the nineteenth century, is the lake’s classic splurge: a five-star with a thermal pool fed by a warm spring, a spa, rooms looking across to the island and a guest book that includes Agatha Christie. Pair one or two nights here with a city stay.

Matching base to trip

For a romantic weekend, choose the old town and Vander Urbani, then add a night at Grand Hotel Toplice. For a first trip with day trips, the Grand Hotel Union puts everything on foot. For drivers and quieter nights, choose Hotel Cubo. For a budget or family trip with several day trips by bus or train, B&B Hotel Ljubljana Park keeps costs down.

Practical tips

Rates rise in summer and through December, when the festive lights draw crowds, so book early for those periods. The old town is car-free, so ask your hotel about parking and drop-off before you arrive. Check whether breakfast is included, and if you are visiting Bled in winter, a hotel with a pool or spa makes cold evenings far more pleasant.
