Few hotels in Marseille have a better address than the Grand Hôtel Beauvau. It stands at the corner of the Vieux-Port and the Canebière, so the harbour, the fish market and the boats to the islands are literally across the road. It is one of the city’s heritage hotels, and among its guests in the 19th century were Frédéric Chopin and George Sand, a connection the hotel still celebrates in its décor. Today it belongs to Accor’s MGallery collection of characterful hotels and is rated four stars. Room categories run from Classic, Superior and Deluxe rooms to Junior Suites, Duplex Suites and a Terrace Suite with panoramic views, and many rooms look straight out over the Old Port, with the Canebière and the Mediterranean beyond. The Bar Beauvau serves cocktails and a choice of wines with a view of the boats, and breakfast is a Provençal spread with local products, served in the breakfast room or in your room. It is a classic, central choice that puts the whole of Marseille within walking distance.
Location and getting around: the address is 4 rue Beauvau in the 1st arrondissement, on the eastern side of the Vieux-Port. Vieux-Port metro station is less than a minute away, and Saint-Charles station is just two stops on the metro, which makes arrival by train very easy. From the door you can walk along the quays to Le Panier and the Mucem in around 15 minutes, catch bus 60 or the Colorbüs up to Notre-Dame de la Garde, and board the shuttle boats to the Château d’If and Frioul a few steps away.
Rooms: book a port-view room or suite if you can; waking up to the harbour is the point of staying here. Rooms facing the side streets are less expensive and generally quieter. The style is classic with a touch of the boutique, as befits an MGallery address, and the Terrace Suite is a real treat for a special occasion.
Who it suits: first-time visitors and couples who want to be at the centre of things, train travellers who value the quick metro link to Saint-Charles, and anyone who prefers a historic hotel to a modern block.
Good to know: parking is not included in the rate, but there is a large public car park nearby. Children are welcome, and pets are accepted for a fee. The Vieux-Port is lively day and night, especially in summer and during events, so light sleepers should ask for a room away from the quay. The hotel holds the Green Key eco-label.
