Memphis is a manageable city, but where you stay still shapes your trip. Downtown puts you within walking distance of Beale Street, The Peabody and the Rock ’n’ Soul Museum; the South Main Arts District is closest to the National Civil Rights Museum; the riverfront at the northern edge of downtown has the Pyramid; and Whitehaven, south of the city, is home to Graceland. Sun Studio and Stax are short drives from any of them. Here are the areas that work best, and the hotel we would choose in each.
Downtown: for first-timers and music nights
Staying downtown means you can walk home from Beale Street and watch the Peabody ducks without planning. For a splurge, The Peabody Memphis is the grand hotel of the South, at 149 Union Avenue since 1925, with 463 rooms remodeled in 2025, the fine-dining Chez Philippe, an indoor pool, a spa and the duck march in its own lobby. For value, the Hampton Inn and Suites Memphis-Beale Street sits about a minute from the clubs and next to FedExForum, with 144 rooms, a free hot breakfast and an indoor pool, and the downtown food tour starts in its lobby. Weekend nights on Beale Street are loud, so ask for a quieter room.
South Main: for couples, design and history
The South Main Arts District, at the southern end of downtown, has galleries, bars and restaurants and a more local feel. The Central Station Memphis, Curio Collection by Hilton, fills a century-old railway station with 123 rooms, neon track signs, a curated vinyl collection with DJ sets and the 8 and Sand restaurant and bar. The National Civil Rights Museum is a five-minute walk, the ghost tour finishes nearby and the trolley runs to Beale Street.
The riverfront and the Pyramid: for families and something different
Big Cypress Lodge is the most unusual hotel in the city, with 103 rooms, treehouses and cabins inside the Memphis Pyramid among indoor cypress trees and a swamp with alligators, plus bowling, restaurants and a lookout over the skyline. It is a short rideshare from Beale Street, and children love it.
Whitehaven: for Elvis fans
The Guest House at Graceland is the official Graceland hotel, a short walk from the mansion, with 450 rooms, 19 specialty suites designed under Priscilla Presley’s supervision, a 464-seat theater, nightly Elvis films and shuttles to Graceland, downtown and the airport. It is ideal for the Holiday Lighting Weekend or a trip built around Graceland, though you will need the shuttle or a rideshare for downtown evenings.
Matching base to trip
For a classic first visit and a special occasion, choose The Peabody. For the lowest cost of a walkable downtown stay, the Hampton Inn. For music, design and the Civil Rights Museum on foot, The Central Station. For a family adventure, Big Cypress Lodge. For an Elvis pilgrimage, the Guest House at Graceland.
Practical tips
Parking is charged at all five hotels, often by the night, so factor it in. The Peabody, the Hampton Inn and Big Cypress have indoor amenities that work in winter, while the Guest House pool is closed from early October to late May. Prices rise on Grizzlies game nights, big festivals and Elvis Week in August, and around Thanksgiving remember that Graceland and Sun Studio are closed on the holiday itself.
