Korakia Pensione

A hidden Moroccan and Mediterranean hideaway of 28 villas in two historic 1920s and 30s estates below the mountains — saltwater pools, breakfast in the courtyard, classic films under the stars and a wellness sanctuary included.

★★★★★

Korakia Pensione is Palm Springs' most romantic secret, a walled 1.5-acre retreat in the Tennis Club neighborhood just west of downtown, where the San Jacinto Mountains rise directly behind the rooftops. It began in the 1920s, when the Scottish painter Gordon Coutts built a Moroccan-style villa, Dar Marroc, to recreate his life in Tangier; guests reportedly included Rudolph Valentino and Errol Flynn, and Winston Churchill is rumored to have painted in the studio. Across the street, a 1930s Mediterranean villa belonging to the actor J. Carrol Naish was later joined to it, and together they form the hotel today: 28 villas and homes, 16 Mediterranean and 12 Moroccan, each with a name rather than a number. Expect high wood-beamed ceilings, whitewashed walls, antique and handmade furnishings, and private patios with mountain views; technology is kept discreetly out of sight in favor of turntables and vintage vinyl, though the Wi-Fi is strong. Two heated saltwater pools, open around the clock, sit among bougainvillea and olive trees. A freshly cooked breakfast is served in the Moroccan courtyard each morning, with tea or coffee delivered to your door, and every night classic films are screened under the stars with popcorn. Wellness is woven in: guests have free use of the Sol Sanctuary, an outdoor contrast-therapy area with two saunas, a copper-tub cold plunge and a shaded lounge, plus Finnish saunas, an open-air garden gym, cruiser bikes and Saturday-morning sun salutation yoga. Massages, sound baths and seasonal guided hikes in Tahquitz Canyon cost extra, and the Moroccan Bar serves hotel guests only. Look for midweek offers outside peak season.

The magic of Korakia is atmosphere. There is no grand lobby, no thumping pool party and no resort fee-driven list of activities; instead, you get candlelit courtyards, fountains, the scent of citrus and jasmine, and the feeling of staying at an artist's private villa somewhere on the Mediterranean. The rooms vary widely in size and character — some are snug studios, some full suites with fireplaces and kitchens, and the Orchard House, a rare 1918 adobe in its own citrus grove, is a private retreat with a full kitchen and dining room. Book by reading the individual room descriptions rather than by category, and ask about stairs or layout if anyone in your party has mobility needs.

Days here are slow by design. Breakfast stretches into a morning by the pool, a bike ride takes you the few blocks into downtown for the museums and Palm Canyon Drive, and late afternoons belong to the sauna and cold plunge. After dinner in town, the film screenings in the garden are a sweet, old-fashioned way to end the night. Korakia is also popular for small weddings, reunions and wellness retreats, and the property sometimes hosts private events, so check when booking if you want complete calm.

Who should stay: couples, creative types, solo travelers and friends who value character over amenities. Who should not: travelers who want room service, a big gym, kids' facilities or a full-service spa, and anyone who needs a modern, standardized room. The walkable location near downtown is a real asset; you can leave the car parked for most of your stay. For full-service glamour choose the Parker; for something this intimate and soulful, nothing in Palm Springs comes close.
