Sun City Camp is one of the best-known places to spend a night in Wadi Rum, and the one many first-timers choose for its Martian domes: air-conditioned geodesic domes with wide windows for looking at the sky from bed, each with a private bathroom and a small patio. There are also traditional Bedouin tents, Royal Tents with a sitting area, family tents and a two-bedroom panoramic suite. The camp lies in the Disi area among sandstone mountains, around a fifteen-minute drive from the Wadi Rum Visitor Centre. Buffet breakfast and dinner feature Jordanian and international dishes, with zarb, meat and vegetables cooked in an underground oven, and live entertainment. Guided jeep tours, camel rides and stargazing sessions can be arranged.
Living in it: the domes give you desert views and comfort at once, and the night sky is the main event.
Trade-offs: it is a large, popular camp rather than a remote hideaway, and alcohol is not sold on site. Nights are cold in winter, though the domes are climate-controlled.
