The Society Hotel

A revived sailors' hotel in Old Town that mixes hostel-style bunk rooms with private rooms and suites — a lobby café-bar, a rooftop deck with panoramic city views and some of the lowest rates downtown.

★★★★★

The Society Hotel is Portland's best answer for travelers who want character on a budget. It occupies a historic building at 203 NW 3rd Avenue in Old Town Chinatown that once housed sailors passing through the port, and the owners restored and reimagined it as a hybrid of hostel and boutique hotel. The accommodation ladder is unusual and flexible. The Bunk Room is a hostel-style shared dormitory with lockable storage, a privacy curtain and a power outlet for each bed, and shared bathrooms; Standard Rooms are private rooms with shared baths, offering hotel privacy at a lower price; Art Suites have private ensuite bathrooms and custom installations by local artists; and Premium Suites add more space and a sofa. The design is simple and handsome — white walls, warm wood, vintage touches and good beds — rather than spartan. The Society Café in the lobby serves coffee by day and cocktails later, and acts as a social hub for guests and locals. The rooftop deck, open to guests and the public, has panoramic views of the city and hosts morning yoga and weekly events with DJs. The location is central and walkable: the waterfront, the Saturday Market, Lan Su Chinese Garden, Powell's City of Books and the Pearl District are all within a short walk, and MAX is nearby. Trade-offs: shared bathrooms in the cheaper categories, minimal services compared with full-service hotels, and an Old Town neighborhood that can feel rough at night. The same group also runs a lodge and spa in the Columbia River Gorge at Bingen, Washington.

The Society works because it treats budget travelers as guests rather than numbers. Shared bathrooms are clean and well kept, the bunk room's privacy curtains and lockers make it workable for solo travelers, and the private rooms are quiet and comfortable. The café-bar and rooftop encourage meeting other travelers without the party atmosphere of a traditional hostel, and the rooftop at sunset, with the city and bridges spread out below, is a genuine highlight.

As with other Old Town hotels, the neighborhood requires normal city awareness. Old Town Chinatown is one of Portland's oldest and most historic districts, with cast-iron buildings and the Chinatown Gate, but it has visible street homelessness and some empty storefronts. In daylight it is an easy, central base; late at night, many guests prefer to return by rideshare. The upside is walkability: you can reach most downtown attractions, the river and the Pearl District on foot.

The Society suits solo travelers, young couples, budget-minded friends and anyone who would rather spend money on food carts and experiences than on a hotel room. Choose an Art Suite or Premium Suite if you want a private bathroom, and book ahead for summer weekends. The rooftop is also one of the best free sunset viewpoints in Old Town, so even guests staying elsewhere sometimes come up for the view and a drink.
