Zhouzhuang Water Town

China's classic canal town, a day trip from Shanghai

Zhouzhuang is the water town with the most history and the most spectacular setting. Located in Kunshan, in Jiangsu province, roughly 80 kilometres from Shanghai, it has more than nine centuries of recorded history and is famous for the Twin Bridges, a pair of stone bridges that cross at right angles over the canals and became an emblem of the region through a well-known painting. The old town is a grid of canals and lanes, with Ming and Qing houses, ancestral halls, teahouses and stone arches, and it is larger and less polished than Zhujiajiao. Sights include the Shen Residence, the home of a wealthy merchant family, the Zhang Residence, a house built around a canal with a boat passing right through the middle, the Fu'an Bridge and a small temple. The town is at its best in the early morning or evening, when day-trippers leave and the canals are calm and lit by lanterns. Boat rides are available, and the local specialties include braised pork knuckle and fish dishes. Because of the distance, most people visit as part of a full-day tour that also stops in Suzhou, whose classical gardens make an excellent pairing with Zhouzhuang's canals.

The appeal of Zhouzhuang is in its scale and authenticity. The canal network is larger than at Zhujiajiao, and the old streets run on for longer, so you can spend a full morning wandering without retracing your steps. The town charges an entry fee that covers many of its sights and boat rides cost extra, so check what is included in your ticket or tour. Away from the main tourist lanes, the quieter backstreets show how residents still live in houses beside the water, which is the experience many visitors came for.

Working the visit: a tour is the easiest way to see Zhouzhuang, because the journey from Shanghai takes about two hours each way by road and public transport requires a bus connection. Look for a tour that pairs the town with Suzhou so the long drive covers two places. If you travel independently, take the bus from a Shanghai long-distance station or a train to Kunshan followed by a bus, and leave early. Aim to arrive before the tour buses and stay into late afternoon, when crowds thin and the light is warm.

Practical notes: the town is hugely popular at weekends and on public holidays, when entry queues and canal traffic can be unpleasant, so a weekday is a much better choice. Bring cash or set up a mobile payment app for small purchases, wear comfortable shoes, and carry water in summer. If you can only do one water town, choose Zhujiajiao for convenience and Zhouzhuang for depth. The Viator private day excursion covers Suzhou and Zhouzhuang together with a driver and guide.
