Arena di Serdica is the hotel with the best story in Sofia. During construction, builders uncovered part of the Roman amphitheatre of ancient Serdica, from the third and fourth centuries, and instead of removing it the hotel preserved it in place. Today the curving stone walls are on display in the reception and lower levels, lit up at night and used occasionally for exhibitions and events. Above them are 63 rooms and apartments, many generously sized and suited to longer stays and families. There are two restaurants, including La Tribuna with its garden, a lobby bar and the Arena di Serdica Wellness Club with sauna and fitness. The address on Budapeshta Street is quiet but central, a few minutes on foot from the Serdika metro and the Largo.
Living in it: history lovers will enjoy walking past Roman masonry on the way to breakfast, and apartments with more space make it a good base for families. The Serdica ruins, the Rotunda of St George and the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral are all within an easy walk.
Trade-offs: decor in some rooms is classic rather than cutting-edge, and the wellness area is modest, with no pool mentioned. Check room types carefully when booking.
