Hyatt Regency Sofia is the modern luxury choice in the centre, set on Vasil Levski Square at the eastern end of the old core, an easy walk from the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Sofia University and Parliament. It has 183 contemporary rooms and suites, with Regency Club rooms for lounge access. The social life of the hotel centres on The Scene, a seventh-floor rooftop bar and terrace with views of the domes and Vitosha, and The Revolutionary, its Italian restaurant, while Mama Sofia Deli Cafe in the lobby serves coffee and quick bites. The Ortus Wellness spa has treatment rooms and a thermal circuit with saunas, a salt room and an ice fountain, and there is a 24-hour Technogym fitness centre.
Living in it: rooms are calm and well designed, and the rooftop bar is one of the best places in Sofia for a sunset drink, so book a table on busy nights. Covered parking on site makes it convenient if you are driving to Rila or Vitosha.
Trade-offs: there is no swimming pool, breakfast and parking are extra, and the square is busy with traffic. Old Town lanes are a fifteen-minute walk rather than on the doorstep.
